MEXICO CITY, April 23 (EFE). – The head of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Bill Nelson, affirmed on Tuesday in the Mexican Senate that the world is experiencing a “golden age in space exploration.”
In a meeting with lawmakers from the Senate of the Mexican Congress, Nelson confirmed that after more than 50 years, they will return to the moon on a new mission at the end of 2026, in which a woman will set foot for the first time in history. On a natural satellite.
He pointed to the opportunity to transport humans to Mars in 2040, and the joint global cooperation, which is reflected in the alliance between Russia, the United States and other countries to build the International Space Station.
He said: “Space unites us, and space is the field where countries come together in international cooperation.”
On this occasion, NASA Deputy Administrator Pamela Milroy expressed her enthusiasm for the space agency's partnership with Mexico due to its capabilities and the quality of its engineers, who she acknowledged have “tremendous capabilities” in many of the country's universities.
The American official encouraged Mexico to build and launch its own satellites, because this will positively affect all industries in Mexican territory in the future.
“In space exploration, Mexico is exactly the ally we should have side by side, side by side, with you in the future,” Pamela Milroy concluded.
His statements come amid a tour by NASA managers, in which they are searching for alliances to enhance space cooperation, after their arrival last Sunday in the capital, Mexico City.
For his part, Director of the Mexican Space Agency, Salvador Landeros, confirmed that this organization’s projects are related to communications and satellite navigation, in order to accelerate digital transformation, communication and social integration.
He also added that work is being done on Earth observation, which has applications in agriculture, natural disaster prevention, security and surveillance, environmental protection, climate change, meteorology, oceanography and urban development, which are important issues for our country and the world region.
Landeros also revealed that Mexico has signed the Artemis Accords to return to the Moon and travel to Mars, and thus our country will have the opportunity to cooperate on projects to achieve long stays on our satellite and later on the Red Planet.
