U.S. President Joe Biden has spoken openly about the impeachment of his predecessor for the first time and the chances of a successful Senate trial that proves Donald Trump guilty. In a short interview CNN, President Biden says the process “should happen.”
On Monday, US President Trump spoke openly about the indictment, and after a long absence from mentioning the situation, his first comment on the matter was – “I believe an investigation should take place,” he said.
Biden said he was aware that Trump’s process could affect the Senate’s work on appointments to his cabinet or legislative priorities, but added that “if the process does not happen, the consequences will be even worse.”
Biden said the outcome would have been different if Trump had been in office and that he did not believe Democrats could force 17 Republican senators to vote for the 17 culprits.
“The Senate has changed since I was last, but it hasn’t changed that much,” Biden said, adding that tough discrimination in U.S. politics is a major obstacle to the former president’s confidence.
On Monday, the House of Representatives formally began proceedings to organize impeachment proceedings in the Senate. Donald Trump is the first president in American history to be indicted twice and the first president to step down.
