The Sunwing Airlines flight skidded off the runway while taking off from the Frank Boyce International Airport in Holguin. It involves a Sunwing Airlines B737-800, flight SWG645, on the Holguin-Montreal route.

It exceeded the established limits during the return maneuver towards the take-off point, causing the landing gear to collapse. This was confirmed by the Cuban company Airports and Airport Services SA

Initially, there was speculation that the diversions might be in response to poor weather conditions. As for this criterion, the judgments are still very reserved.

The incident took place on August 29 at exactly 8:35 pm. Additionally, a note posted on Facebook by the Cuban company Airports and Airport Services SA confirmed that there were no injuries to passengers or crew.

However, the incident led to movement of the aircraft and hence, the technicians had to remove the aircraft from the runway.

In this sense, and for security reasons, Frank País International Airport had to transfer three scheduled operations to other alternative airports. We are talking about Swift Air SWQ281, Sunwing Airline SWG641 and Viva Aerobus VIV417.

What happened after the incident?

After the responsible technical personnel removed the aircraft from the runway, normal operations resumed at 11:15 am this Wednesday.

For its part, the Cuban News Agency (ACN) confirmed that the airport was operating as usual after Tuesday’s incident.

Juan Pablo Contreras, a well-known ACN journalist, quoted on his Facebook wall that “normality and operability” are already visible in the terminal.

Until now, Cuban airport authorities are investigating the reasons that led to the incident.
