Kenyan John chebii and the Asturian triathlete Paula Herrero they got victory in the Science career, the first classic of the Madrid athletic autumn, which reached its fortieth edition after missing the appointment last year due to the pandemic.

On the asphalt wet from the recent rain, although already sunny, 2,000 runners started at 9.00 am on Calle de Serrano, next to the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), on whose campus the finish line was located as a finish to a 10 km route through the northern half of the Spanish capital.

The CSIC wanted to be exemplary in terms of health protocols, given the importance of science in controlling the pandemic. The organizers had limited enrollment to those 2,000 participants, a 50% reduction, to prevent contagion.

The security measures adopted included random temperature controls and a departure in waves to avoid crowds at the beginning of the route. Before the start and during the first 100 meters the mask was mandatory.

The race, which debuted as a sponsor with Evolution, was broken in the first kilometer. Going down Serrano, the Kenyan John Chebii took the lead, increased his advantage and finished with a mark of 31:20, almost a minute faster than the Madrilenian Borja Aragoneses, second and first Spanish with 32:08. Fernando Fernández (32:19), Youness Ait Hadi (33:43) and Jesús González (33:44) they were classified below.

In the female category the differences were greater. Paula Herrero, Spanish champion of triathlon in Olympic distances, prevailed with a time of 34:17 (seventh in the joint general) and surpassed the second by more than four minutes, Alice of the Farm (38:29).

The China Dong Liu, who was 1,500 world champion at Stuttgart’93, completed the podium with a mark of 39:28, ahead of Almudena Marcos (39:48) and Mercedes Romero (41:07).

    Participants

For Rosa Menéndez, president of the CSIC, This year’s edition was “doubly special” because, he explained, “it brings us back together after a forced break and it does so on its fourth decade.”

The organizer, Carlos Cisneros, highlighted that almost 70% of the participants were between 35 and 45 years old, and that the participation of women, close to 27%, continued to increase compared to previous editions.
