What are the best beaches in the world according to science?

Today, during the celebration of World Oceans Day, the results were revealed Rating of the best beaches for 2024.

While the networks are full of rankings based on empirical selections of the beauty of beaches, according to the criteria of influencers and travellers, the Best Beaches 2024 ranking is based on rigorous scientific methods to obtain an objective and useful result for tourists, judges and managers. Environmentalists, journalists and others interested.

the total 123 beaches ratedThey come from 13 countries: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Spain, Guatemala, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Puerto Rico And Venezuela.

Cuba was the country with the most winning beaches, with five placing in the top ten.

The top ten consists of Varadero Melia Antillas (Cuba); Ituna-Sacarema (Brazil); Historic Varadero (Cuba); Varadero-e. International (Cuba); Punta de Nossa sa de Guadalupe – Salvador (Brazil); Gromary-Rio de Janeiro (Brazil); La Estrella – Cayo Santa Maria (Cuba); Perla Blanca-Paradises-Cayo Santa Maria (Cuba); Praia do Forno Buzios (Brazil) and Praia Azida Buzios (Brazil).

The selected beaches received scores ranging from 90 to 93 points, with a maximum of 100 points.

In Puerto Rico, five beaches were evaluated. This was it Sardinera, in Hatillo (70); Culebra, Culebra (75); Playuela, Cabo Rojo (78); Flamenco, Culebra (80) and Escambrón, San Juan (83).

Beaches receive their designation after one or more residents diagnose their recreational values, coastal protection, ecosystem preservation, and health quality. Each index evaluates a key aspect of beaches, with a unique, easy-to-interpret scale.

Litter and waste, access and parking, carrying capacity, services and infrastructure, natural value, safety, storm protection, shoreline stability, induced changes, wave energy dissipation, vulnerability, environmental quality, management actions, habitat, species, heritage, water quality Sand quality, cross-contamination and sanitary services are some of the elements that need to be taken into consideration.

46 academics, managers and specialists from various disciplines participated in the evaluation process, who were prepared as evaluators by the International Training Center for Beach Management and Certification (CIFPLAYAS).
