Ukraine repels Russia's nighttime attack with drones, missiles and warplanes

(cnn) — Christmas Eve was far from quiet in Ukraine as the country's air force said it shot down 28 Russian drones, two missiles and two fighter jets overnight.

The drone strikes took place in six regions of Ukraine: Odesa, Kherson and Mykolayiv in the south, Donetsk in the east, Kirovohrad in south-central Ukraine and Khmelnytskyi in the west.

Ukraine says it has destroyed a guided missile in the southern region of Zaporizhia and an anti-aircraft missile from the Black Sea.

Note from the General Staff of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Air Force: A Russian Su-24 fighter jet was destroyed in eastern Donetsk and an Su-30 SM was destroyed over the Black Sea.

In Donetsk, three people were injured, according to the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office, when Russian armed forces shelled the frontline towns of Ocherityn and New York. Residential buildings were also destroyed in those areas.

In the southern part of Kherson, one person was killed and two others were wounded, according to Oleksandr Prokudin, head of the regional military administration.

Prokudin, who reported 71 attacks in his region the previous day, said Russian troops fired on residential areas.
