Peru’s president has taken another step in escalating diplomatic tensions with regional governments. Last week, the Congress declared a person Not grata To Colombian President Gustavo Pedro, this Friday Tina Poluarte has announced a drastic measure against the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador: the definitive withdrawal of Peru’s ambassador to Mexico. Accompanied by Prime Minister Alberto Otárola and Foreign Minister Ana Cecilia Gervasi, Boluarte delivered a very brief message to the nation in which he registered his discomfort with his counterpart. The bilateral relationship will be reduced to business managers.

“I strongly reject the comments made by the President of Mexico about the internal affairs of Peru and the unacceptable questions he repeatedly raises about the constitutional and democratic nature of my government. To support the coup of former President Pedro Castillo, Mr. “López has decided, which unanimously rejected the institutions that create a democratic order in Peru,” the debated head of state pointed out. The presidency passed on December 7 after Castillo’s failed self-conspiracy.

López Obrador expressed himself in harsher terms against Polwart in the morning, calling him a “bad president” and noting his high level of denial. “However, they rule with bayonets and oppression and force. More than 60 people have already been killed and the same opinion polls show a majority calling for elections, asking the people to decide,” he said at his morning press conference. The Mexican president also recalled a meeting with former First Lady Lilia Paredes, who was granted political asylum along with Castillo’s children. “She is an exceptional, modest, nice woman who came to thank me for what I did with them and to tell me about her children who are studying. We are trying not to harm them and to help them,” he said.

Since 2021, Manuel Gerardo Talavera Espinar has served as Ambassador of Peru to Mexico. Talavera was also Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs during Martin Vizcarra’s presidency. The decision, a deepening indictment of relations between the two countries, was compounded by the expulsion of Pablo Monroe, who was Mexico’s ambassador to Peru until late last year. In a further twist of tension, López Obrador refused to hand over the presidency of the Pacific Alliance, a trade coordination mechanism formed by Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru, to Polwart.

“Through his statements, Mr. López violates the principle of international law of non-interference in internal affairs, as well as the protection and promotion of democracy. Mr. López, by undermining important integration processes that benefit our people, such as the Pacific, has historically united Peru and Mexico in terms of mutual respect, friendship, “Decided to seriously affect the bicentennial relations of the will of cooperation and integration. Alliance.”, Tina Polwart pointed out in her speech. From now on, diplomatic relations between the two countries “will be at the level of formal officials”.
