This artwork by Bob Dylan sold for nearly $200,000.

A rare abstract painting by Chinnathavam Bob Dylan 50 years ago, it was recently sold for a considerable sum. The work, dating from around 1968, was bought for exactly USD 196,000 at an auction managed by RR Auctions, the house said in a press release issued on Friday, May 24, to coincide with the musician's 83rd birthday.

The work was done during the artist's stay in Woodstock, New York, during which he collaborated. band. The recordings of those sessions were later released Foundation tapes 1975 and in The Bootleg Series Volume 11: The Basement Tapes In 2014.

According to the RR auction website, the painting is described as a “colorful and dynamic abstract composition with a large central line of a bull.” Also, “The canvas is filled with captivating abstract shapes and forms combined with recognizable images including musical notes, bow ties, animals and detached features. At the top is a red outline of a man with a fedora, reflecting his own style during his Woodstock days.

This painting has a unique history. In exchange for receiving his astrological chart, Dylan offered the painting to Woodstock resident Sandy Lepando. The piece remained in her family until it was recently rediscovered on the property of her ex-husband, Anthony Lepanto.

“Sandy is not only one of the most beautiful women in town; He is a mystic, a channeler, a star reader and creator of astrological charts for his friends. Mythology fascinated her, and she studied widely and deeply the legends of many cultures. “Dylan gave Sandy a painting in exchange for the graphics and readings he did,” the description reads.

In addition to his iconic music, Dylan received recognition for his artwork, some of which are displayed. One of his paintings was used on the cover of The Band's debut album in 1968, Music by Big Bing. His art also appeared on their 1970 double album, Self portrait.

“His art knows no bounds, this vibrant piece combines music, symbolism and personal reflection,” concluded Bobby Livingston, executive vice president of RR Auctions, in a press release.

Currently, the artist is on tour as part of the Outlaw Music Festival 2024, which includes Willie Nelson, Robert Plant, Alison Krauss and John Mellencamp among others.
