On Wednesday, July 5, in Valparaiso, Science Minister Aisin Echeverri, together with Seremi Macrozona Centro, visited the scientific vessel Abate Molina, and they were received by the Executive Director of the Institute for Fisheries Development (IFOP), Gonzalo. Pereira with a team of professionals and technicians. The ship was toured, the state-of-the-art facilities and laboratories shown, and work and progress on the research topics being led by Abate Molina today announced.

Science Minister Aysen Echeverri explained: “Many people do not know that the state is doing research. It does this with two main goals: to create new technologies that have the characteristics of public goods or that are needed by the country; and generate research that supports the design of public policies. A good example is the Institute for Fisheries Development (IFOP). Today I visited the Abate Molina vessel, in Valparaíso, which is part of the scientific infrastructure for ocean research in Chile, managed and operated by IFOP, and was able to see how it contributes directly to national scientific knowledge, to the development of evidence-based public policies by training of trained people highly engaged in ocean research. The different fields that its scientific infrastructure allows to be studied, and how marine biology, oceanography, fisheries, aquaculture and many more, allow the country to make informed and sustainable decisions about managing our ocean »

Gonzalo Pereira, Director of the IFOP, referred to the activity “For us, the visit of the Minister of Science to the scientific vessel is very important, as I was able to see the research work in the field, both fisheries and oceans, that our institute is developing. Pereira also appreciated the participation Jorge Soto, center of Seremi Macrozona, who was very interested in coordinating activities with IFOP and universities in the region”

It has an EK60 sonar that is used in assessments (Hydroacoustics) of fishing resources. It also has a rose and a CTD that Allow assessment of oceanographic variables, plankton gear, nets and sampling structures, fishing nets for assessment of biology and direct sampling of resources, and visibility of an important meteorological station on climate change.
