The director of the Faculty of Sciences of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Víctor Manuel Velázquez Aguilar, boasted of his high salary and mocked a professor for earning less.

In the program Los Datos Turos, they shared a recording of Ciencias TV in which Professor Efrain Vega questioned educators about the low salaries teachers receive.

In the recording, Victor Manuel Velázquez brags about his level of education: “You have a degree, right? Well, I have a post-doctorate.” The teacher continues to confront him: “A subject teacher shouldn’t be making $8,500 a month.”

To which the officer replies: “I found it difficult. Want to make money with what you have? Scrub him, work for him, well, no way”, and he immediately boasted about his salary: “I make $168,000 in cash”.

The original video was shared four months ago and has now been reposted as several UNAM teachers protested against receiving better salaries from academics they identified as gold bureaucrats.

In one of their calls for the march held on June 29, “The academics of the golden bureaucracy treat each other like kings: they earn a fortune, protect themselves, keep their jobs, distribute licenses and sabbaticals. I set foot in UNAM in many years”.

“75% of UNAM faculty who earn between $2,000 and $8,000 pesos a month are in a precarious position even in their full-time activities,” they said.

Ciro Murayama Rendón, a former INE consultant, immediately requested a sabbatical year upon returning to teach at the Faculty of Economics after it was revealed that he had ended his work at the institution and returned to teach at UNAM. Land, it was approved.
