National Route 12, a major artery connecting the 11 municipalities of the San Marcos Plateau, shows obvious signs of deterioration. In the words of the Minister of Communications, Infrastructure and Housing (CIV) Jasmin de la Vega, the condition that should have lasted for at least two decades is in a critical condition, demonstrating the shoddy work in its construction.

With an estimated traffic of up to 500,000 vehicles, this important road connecting the region is in a deplorable condition, endangering the safety of users.

«It is true that he said that it has been five years since he was surprised to see the condition of the road. It is not possible that such haphazard works could have been done in five years, because it is obvious when you see it on the road.«, noted de la Vega in a study carried out on Saturday, February 24.

Lack of preventive measures

Officials said, 'Due to lack of proper maintenance and preventive measures, the road is rapidly deteriorating.

During the visit, officials confirmed the urgent need of the ministry.

The minister explains that the presence of only two lanes and the continuous traffic of heavy vehicles significantly increase the risk of accidents on this road.

Follow up

The CIV will meet with parliamentarians to obtain resources, designs and, if necessary, planning to improve roads.

De la Vega, with its sharp curves and inadequate conditions, this stretch poses a hidden danger to drivers.
