OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma homeowners will have another opportunity to seek financial assistance for storm-resistant home improvements when the Strengthen Oklahoma Homes Program opens its next statewide application period on October 12.
The Oklahoma Insurance Department (OID) announced that applications will open at 12 p.m. noon on Monday, October 12, 2026. The program offers grants of up to $10,000 per approved household to help eligible homeowners complete qualifying improvements designed to strengthen their properties against severe weather.
More than 600 Oklahoma homes have completed the program and received FORTIFIED certification since its initial launch, according to OID. The upcoming fourth-quarter application period will make the program available to eligible homeowners statewide.
Grants of Up to $10,000 Available to Oklahoma Homeowners
The Strengthen Oklahoma Homes Program provides financial assistance for approved construction projects intended to improve residential resilience.
Eligible households can receive grants of up to $10,000 toward qualifying work. Projects must be designed to meet the FORTIFIED standard established by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS).
Specifically, participating homes must meet the FORTIFIED Home – Roof™ – High Wind designation with the Hail Supplement.
The standard focuses on strengthening roofing systems and related components to help homes withstand high winds and hail. Such improvements are particularly relevant in Oklahoma, where severe thunderstorms, damaging winds and hail can pose significant risks to residential properties.
More Than 600 Homes Complete the Program
OID said more than 600 homes across Oklahoma have completed the Strengthen Oklahoma Homes Program and received FORTIFIED certification.
The milestone reflects growing participation in the initiative as homeowners seek ways to improve their properties’ ability to withstand severe weather.
FORTIFIED construction standards are designed to go beyond conventional building practices by incorporating measures intended to reduce damage during severe weather events. Roof improvements can be especially important because damage to a roofing system can expose the rest of a home to wind and water.
The program provides homeowners with financial support for approved improvements rather than requiring participating households to bear the full cost of qualifying upgrades.
Statewide Application Period Opens October 12
The fourth-quarter application period will be available to eligible homeowners throughout Oklahoma.
Applications are scheduled to open at noon on October 12. OID is encouraging prospective applicants to review the program’s requirements and gather necessary documentation before the application period begins.
Eligibility requirements include program-specific criteria and income tiers. Applicants also must provide required documentation as part of the process.
Preparing those materials before applications open could help homeowners complete the application process more efficiently once the statewide window begins.
Home Improvements May Lead to Insurance Discounts
In addition to helping properties become more resistant to severe weather, participation in the Strengthen Oklahoma Homes Program may provide some homeowners with opportunities for potential home insurance discounts.
Any available discount would depend on applicable insurance requirements and the homeowner’s individual policy and insurer.
The combination of financial assistance for construction improvements and potential insurance benefits is intended to encourage greater adoption of resilient building standards across the state.
For Oklahoma’s insurance market, increasing the number of homes built or upgraded to stronger resilience standards could also help limit property damage from certain severe-weather events.
Oklahoma Expands Focus on Residential Resilience
The statewide application period represents the latest phase of the Strengthen Oklahoma Homes initiative as the program builds on more than 600 completed properties.
Rather than focusing solely on repairs following storms, the initiative directs funding toward preventative improvements intended to make homes more resilient before damaging weather occurs.
Homeowners considering an application are encouraged to review eligibility rules, documentation requirements, income tiers and other program information before the October 12 opening.
