Second round, reactions and last minute

President Ivan Duque’s approval rating is currently low, and his tenure has been clouded by police misconduct, inequality and conflicts between organized crime groups.

For the first time in the country’s history, popular discontent has led the Left to run for president. However, preliminary results indicate that Pedro, 62, a former guerrilla fighter and former mayor of Bogot, was widely regarded as one of the leading candidates.

Analyst Vicente Torrijos says the biggest losers in this first round were President Ivan Duque and former President Alvaro Uribe, while the latter were particularly decisive when they did not support any candidate.

Uribismo is no longer an electoral power for the past 20 years, as analyst Rafael Nieto Loisa previously told CNN en Español, “Duque was elected president and ruled for four years.

With a high degree of unfavorableness, former President Alvaro Eurie has acknowledged that the 2022 presidential election could be spent instead of increasing his support for any candidate.

“Whenever I approach any candidate, they call me ‘Uribista’ and stigmatize him,” Uribe said in mid-April.

Finally, the election is a referendum on the Ivan Duque government, which he told the BBC last week with confidence that he would have been re-elected if he had stood for election. What this first presidential round shows is that, after four years of government, with much suffering and great opposition, the Colombians want to oust the Duke and his most unpopular government from Colombian politics.

However, after Guterres and many right-wing politicians clung to Hernandez’s campaign, many Euripism did not die, only to be replaced.
