A coalition of Republican state attorneys general is set to hold a high-profile press conference in Washington on Monday, aiming to draw national attention to two closely watched legal cases concerning the regulation of school sports in the United States.

The event, organised by the Republican Attorneys General Association (RAGA), will take place at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, ahead of oral arguments at the US Supreme Court in BPJ v. West Virginia and Little v. Hecox. Both cases focus on whether individual states possess constitutional authority to establish eligibility rules for school athletics based on biological sex.

Legal Context and National Implications

At the centre of the dispute is a broader national debate over fairness and safety in women’s sports, particularly at the school and collegiate levels. Supporters of the state laws under review argue that sex-based eligibility rules are necessary to preserve competitive balance and protect opportunities for female athletes. Opponents maintain that such laws may conflict with constitutional protections and federal anti-discrimination principles.

RAGA said the press conference is intended to outline the legal and policy implications of the cases, which could have far-reaching consequences for how athletic programmes are governed across the United States. A ruling from the Supreme Court is expected to influence legislation, school policies, and compliance frameworks nationwide.

Participation of Former Elite Athletes

The press conference will feature several former elite female athletes who have become prominent advocates in the debate over women’s sports. Riley Gaines, a twelve-time NCAA All-American swimmer, is among the most recognisable figures expected to attend.

She will be joined by Macy Petty, a former NCAA volleyball athlete, and Jennifer Sey, a former national all-around gymnastics champion who now serves as chief executive of the athletic apparel company XX-XY Athletics. Olympic silver medallist and former NCAA national champion MyKayla Skinner is also scheduled to participate.

Their involvement highlights the increasing role of former professional and collegiate athletes in shaping public discussion around sports governance, athlete welfare, and regulatory standards.

State Attorneys General in Attendance

Eight Republican attorneys general from across the country are expected to attend the event, including the two officials presenting arguments before the Supreme Court.

Those listed include West Virginia Attorney General J.B. McCuskey, Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador, Montana Attorney General and RAGA Chairman Austin Knudsen, Utah Attorney General Derek Brown, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill, Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares, and Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita.

The presence of senior state legal officials underscores the political and constitutional significance attached to the cases.

Business and Regulatory Considerations

From a business and regulatory perspective, the outcome of the Supreme Court hearings could affect not only public school systems but also collegiate athletic associations, sports governing bodies, and organisations involved in youth and amateur sport.

Compliance obligations, policy development, and risk management strategies may be reshaped depending on how the Court interprets states’ authority to regulate athletic participation.

The issue has attracted increasing attention from education-sector stakeholders, sponsors, and investors as sport governance becomes more closely linked with legal and political developments.

Event Details and Media Access

The press conference is scheduled for Monday, January 12, at 1:00pm Eastern Time and will take place at the National Press Club, located at 529 14th Street NW in Washington, DC.

Members of the media wishing to attend are required to RSVP by 10:00am Eastern Time on the day of the event in order to gain access to the venue, according to organisers.

As the Supreme Court prepares to hear oral arguments, the event is expected to serve as a focal point for supporters of state-level authority in women’s sports regulation, while drawing attention to the broader legal and institutional implications for athletics in the United States.
