Pedro Sánchez on Luis Rubiales’ apology for kiss: “They are not enough”

(CNN) — Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has vowed that an apology from Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales for kissing Jennifer Hermoso after the Women’s World Cup final is “not enough”.

Spanish government president Pedro Sánchez has confirmed that Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales’ apology for kissing Spain midfielder Jennifer Hermoso on the lips was “not enough”.

“What we saw was an unacceptable gesture,” Sanchez said in response to questions from reporters on Tuesday.

“Regarding Mr. Rubiales and all the controversies that happened. First of all, I think that they, the players, have done everything to win. But in this case of Mr. Rubiales, it is true that there was some behavior, and in our country there is still a long way to go in terms of equality and respect and equality of rights between women and men. It shows that there is a long way to go,” Sanchez said.

“The apologies of Mr. Rubiales are not enough. I think they are not enough, therefore, Mr. Rubiales must continue the steps to clarify what we all saw,” the head of the Spanish government continued.

This Monday, Rubiales Hermoso admitted he “made a mistake” with a surprise kiss on the lips. Rubiales faced extensive criticism over the incident.
