CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Opera Carolina has announced a major leadership transition as the organization enters its 77th season, appointing Maestro Stefano Vignati as General Director while unveiling a broader strategy focused on artistic excellence, financial sustainability, community engagement and international collaboration.

The appointment marks a new chapter for one of the Southeast’s longest-running cultural institutions. Vignati, who currently serves as Music Director and Principal Conductor, will now lead the organization’s artistic and operational direction as it seeks to expand its reach across Charlotte and strengthen its long-term financial position.

Opera Carolina said the leadership change comes as the company looks to build on its existing artistic foundation while deepening relationships with audiences, donors and community partners. The organization also noted that new supporters and donors have already expressed confidence in the company’s future direction and strategic plans.

Vignati brings extensive international experience to the role. His recent engagements include conducting the Puccini Festival Torre del Lago production of Turandot during a tour of China that marked centennial celebrations in Xiamen, Chongqing and Wuhan. The performances were attended by Christopher L. Green, Consul General of the United States in Wuhan.

This summer, Vignati is scheduled to conduct the Orchestra of the Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova at the Lerici Music Festival, where he will lead the world premiere of Per Mare, a symphonic work by composer Roberto Di Marino.

Opera Carolina said Vignati’s international collaborations and artistic leadership continue to raise the organization’s profile while creating opportunities for future partnerships and artistic development.

77th Season Blends Tradition, Innovation and Community Partnerships

The company’s 77th season will feature a mix of classic opera productions, community-focused programming and special events designed to attract both longtime patrons and new audiences.

The season opens on Sept. 11, 2026, with Mozart’s Requiem at the Knight Theater. The performance, presented in partnership with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and Charlotte Master Chorale, will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks while honoring resilience, unity and hope.

In November, Opera Carolina will stage Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Medium at the Halton Theater. The production will feature internationally recognized mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves in one of opera’s most noted psychological dramas.

The organization’s annual gala, A Night to Remember, returns in January at the Belk Theater. The event will showcase celebrated operatic love duets and appearances by guest artists.

In February, Opera Carolina will present its annual Lift Every Voice program, highlighting the contributions of Afro-American composers and artists whose work has influenced opera and classical music traditions.

The spring portion of the season concludes with Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata at the Belk Theater. Conducted by Vignati, the production will be presented alongside the organization’s 22nd annual “Bella Notte” Grand Gala.

Beyond its mainstage performances, Opera Carolina is expanding its community presence through outreach initiatives and partnerships. Among them is Pups & Puccini, scheduled for June 15 in partnership with the Humane Society of Charlotte. The event combines live music with animal adoption efforts and community engagement activities.

“The Humane Society of Charlotte is honored to partner with Opera Carolina to celebrate the extraordinary bond between people and pets through music, community, and compassion. Pups & Puccini is a joyful reminder that the arts and animal welfare both have the power to bring people together, inspire kindness, and enrich our lives. We look forward to sharing this unforgettable evening with our community.”

The organization is also preparing to host the eighth edition of the “Marcello Giordani” International Voice Competition in June 2027. Presented in collaboration with the International Lyric Academy and Wilma Ahrens, the competition is expected to attract emerging opera talent from around the world. Winners will perform during a final Concert Gala at the Halton Theater.

Opera Carolina also announced plans to broaden community engagement through programs such as Opera Xpress, which brings performances to schools, parks and community venues, Musical Storytime for children and families, and a series of family-friendly opera concerts.

Supporting these efforts is the newly launched “Be the Heart of Opera Carolina” fundraising campaign. The initiative seeks support from individuals, corporations, foundations and community leaders to fund artistic productions, educational programs, outreach efforts, emerging artist development, organizational growth and accessibility initiatives.

As part of the organization’s governance transition, architect Paul E. Kardous has been appointed Chair of the Board of Directors. Opera Carolina said Kardous will work alongside Vignati and board members to guide the organization’s next phase of growth, with a focus on financial stability, organizational development and deeper community engagement throughout the Charlotte region.
