ANAHEIM — Shohei Ohtani knew the ball wouldn’t come back once it left his bat.
After hitting a 1-2 fastball off Yankees reliever Michael King, the versatile player took time to enjoy a ball that sailed over the fence in left-center field. A career in the Big Top.
Ohtani was clearly emotional after hitting his 35th home run of the year to tie the game at 3-3 in the seventh. After Michael Stefanik shut down the Yankees with a golden single in the bottom of the 10th inning in the Angels’ 4-3 win at Angel Stadium, the side drive was key.
“It was the most emotional gesture I’ve ever seen him do on the field,” Angels manager Bill Nevin said. “It was amazing. A wonderful moment. When your superstar shows up at times like that and something like that happens, it rubs off on all of us.”
It was the third straight game with a home run for Ohtani, who already surpassed his home run total of 34 last year. It was his 35th homer in the Angels’ first 95 games this season, the same pace set by Yankees hitter Aaron Judge last year. Judge homered it 36 times en route to setting the AL mark with 62 home runs in New York’s first 95 games and moving ahead of Ohtani in Young Circuit MVP voting.
But after injuring his thumb in early June, Judge has been limited to just 49 games this season, and Ohtani is the favorite to win the coveted AL MVP trophy for the second time in three years. And, of course, Ohtani is set to become a free agent after this season, like the wonders of the baseball world. If the Angels trade him before the August 1 deadline.
“All I can tell you about him is that he cares,” Nevin said. “Everything he does to win counts as the best player in the world. It has been a very disappointing past two weeks for all of us. But he wants to win and he wants to do it here.
