Motugua and Olimpia draw goalless in first final of Honduras National League | uses

In the first leg of this Sunday’s final, which ended 0-0, Motagua squandered a chance against Olympia when they missed a penalty that could have changed the history of the game.

Motagua, who came from the top, managed only one Argentinian, Agustin Ausmendi, who missed a penalty opportunity in the 7th minute.

Olympia, disjointed in its lines, looked to do damage with intermediate shots and had at least two clear chances with one goal that was well saved by Motagua goalkeeper Jonathan Rougier.

Modagua scored their highest goal in the first half when they had a clear shot at the feet of ‘Gunslinger’ Agustin Ausmendi, who missed the maximum penalty.

Olympia’s goalkeeper, Eric Menjivar, rushed to his right and saved the penalty.

Olympia, the last champion led by Argentina’s Pedro Troglio, went on the attack with Jerry Bengtsson and Jorge Bengueche, who were not given much freedom by the rival’s stamp.

Colombian Yustin Arbolida, who replaced Bengtsson in the second half, was also absent.

Modagua, led by Argentinian-Honduran Diego Vázquez, surprised its fierce rival and neighbors in the national classic, showing its undefeated status and reaching the first game of the finals, but not precisely in the area led by Troglio. The best thing they had was their defense.

In the second half, Modagua also took the initiative, with the arrivals of Carlos Argueta, Ricky Zapata and Yazon Mejia sending the ball to Ausmendi to filter out.

Modagua stifled Olimpia’s efforts by closing the gaps for one of his team’s most unbalanced midfield players, Jose Mario Pinto.

Diego Vázquez’s team, which reached the final with Olimpia after a play-off and semi-final that beat Olancho and Marathon, was also good in defense in the second episode of the game, which, although there were no goals, was a good situation, a classic between the two best teams in Honduran football.

Olympia finished two regular rounds in first place, sealing its direct pass to the semifinals via regulation.

They knocked out Genesis in the semi-finals and after today’s draw against Motagua, they will need a win to lift their 37th trophy.

Motagua must win if it is to win its 19th championship.

The second leg of the final will also take place on the 21st at the José de la Paz Herrera National Stadium in Tegucigalpa, home of both clubs.
