TACOMA, Wash. — Singer-songwriter Kye Alfred Hillig has released “On Small Wings,” the lead single from his upcoming album Widowmaker Express, offering listeners an early look at a project rooted in personal reflection, resilience, and hope.

The track serves as the first preview of Widowmaker Express, which is scheduled for release on August 5. Released on July 8, “On Small Wings” continues Hillig’s tradition of emotionally driven songwriting while introducing themes that will play a central role throughout the forthcoming album.

Over the past decade, Hillig has established himself as a distinctive voice in the Pacific Northwest music scene. The former member of Destruction Island and Pistol For A Paycheck has built a catalog known for its thoughtful storytelling and unflinching examination of life’s challenges. His work often focuses on finding meaning and beauty in difficult circumstances, a quality that remains central to “On Small Wings.”

The new single explores themes of love, vulnerability, and patience. Rather than presenting connection as something immediate or easily obtained, the song emphasizes the value of perseverance and trust. According to Hillig, meaningful relationships develop over time and require a willingness to remain open despite setbacks.

As Hillig puts it, love isn’t “coming cheap out of the vending machine,” but arrives through showing up for others and investing in something larger than yourself.

That message forms the emotional foundation of the track, which balances introspective lyrics with a warm folk-rock sound. Drawing from alt-country and singer-songwriter traditions, the song reflects influences associated with Wilco, The Flaming Lips, The Shins, and Dragging An Ox Through Water while maintaining Hillig’s own voice and perspective.

The setting that inspired the music is also deeply embedded in the song’s identity. Hillig’s songwriting frequently reflects the character of Tacoma and the surrounding region, and “On Small Wings” is no exception. References to working-class neighborhoods, waterfront landscapes, and the everyday experiences of local residents help shape the atmosphere of the track.

Years spent working in social services have also informed Hillig’s creative approach. His observations of people facing personal struggles, small victories, and moments of resilience have become recurring themes throughout his music. Those experiences contribute to the grounded perspective found in “On Small Wings,” where optimism is presented not as certainty but as something earned through persistence.

The single also marks a significant creative partnership. “On Small Wings” reunites Hillig with longtime friend and producer Daniel G. Harmann, whose professional relationship with the songwriter spans more than a decade.

Recorded at Harmann Audio Labs in Seattle, the project showcases a production style designed to complement Hillig’s storytelling rather than overshadow it. Harmann’s approach adds warmth and texture to the recording while maintaining a focus on the song’s lyrical themes and emotional depth.

The collaboration offers listeners an early indication of the broader direction of Widowmaker Express. While the album is expected to explore subjects including grief, faith, heartbreak, and survival, the lead single highlights a more optimistic perspective that runs through the project.

Hillig has described the album as emerging from personal upheaval, hard questions, and “a wrestling match with God.” Those experiences helped shape a record that examines difficult realities while still searching for meaning and redemption.

For listeners, “On Small Wings” provides an introduction to that journey. The song stands on its own as a reflective folk-rock release, but it also serves as a gateway to the themes that define Widowmaker Express. At its core, the track suggests that hope often arrives gradually, built through patience, commitment, and faith in the possibility of connection.

As anticipation builds for the release of Widowmaker Express, “On Small Wings” offers a compelling first chapter in what promises to be one of Hillig’s most personal and introspective projects to date.
