The Maxwell Football Club has launched a new finalist interview series designed to give voters additional insight into the athletes and coaches shortlisted for its annual awards. The initiative, unveiled this week, will feature conversations with each Maxwell Award finalist, offering a deeper look at their performance, development, and impact throughout the 2025 season.

The first instalment centres on Indiana University quarterback Fernando Mendoza, who appears on the most recent episode of the organisation’s Maxed Out Podcast. The series, produced by the club’s in-house media team, aims to provide voters with direct, unfiltered access to the individuals under consideration for some of college football’s most prestigious honours.

In an announcement to supporters, the Club said: “Each Maxwell Award finalist was invited to sit down with our media talent, allowing them to introduce themselves directly to voters, discuss their seasons, and reflect on their journeys.” A similar series is planned for the George Munger Coach of the Year Award.

Spotlight on Fernando Mendoza

Mendoza, who has been one of the standout performers of the 2025 college football season, sat down with Maxwell Football Club media talent Taylor Arenz to review his campaign, discuss leadership responsibilities, and reflect on a historic year for Indiana. According to the Club, the interview allows the quarterback to revisit the “standout moments of his season, his growth as a leader, and the mindset that fuelled his success throughout the 2025 campaign”.

2025 Performance and Statistics

Mendoza’s performance statistics underscore why he has emerged as a prominent contender for national recognition. He recorded 2,758 passing yards, demonstrating an ability to generate high-volume offence with consistency and accuracy. His command of the passing game was further reflected in his 32 passing touchdowns, a figure that not only led the nation but also set a new single-season touchdown record for the Hoosiers.

His completion rate of 72% ranks fifth nationally and highlights his efficiency and decision-making. The Maxwell Football Club noted that Mendoza has been “consistently threading the football to his receivers and putting them in position to make plays after the catch.” Beyond the passing game, he contributed 243 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns, establishing himself as a dual-threat quarterback capable of influencing games on the ground as well as through the air.

Key Victories of the Season

Mendoza’s season included several key wins that helped propel Indiana to the best regular-season record in its history.

63–10 Victory Over Illinois

The early-season win showcased Mendoza’s command of Indiana’s offence, including more than 250 passing yards and five touchdowns.

30–20 Win Against No. 4 Oregon

While his statistical output was strong, the performance was defined by composure under pressure. He consistently attacked Oregon’s defensive looks before delivering the decisive moment — an eight-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Sarratt to complete a 12-play, 75-yard drive and break a 20–20 tie.

27–24 Road Triumph at Penn State

In one of the toughest atmospheres in the sport, Mendoza led an 80-yard scoring drive in just over a minute to secure the victory and preserve Indiana’s unbeaten season.

Purpose of the Interview Series

The Maxwell Football Club said it hopes the podcast series will help inform voters as they continue to evaluate finalists. Officials noted: “Fernando appeared on the Maxed Out Podcast for an in-depth discussion about his season, leadership, and the key moments behind Indiana’s best regular season in school history. We hope this feature offers additional context as you continue to evaluate this year’s finalists.”

A Strategic Shift in Voter Engagement

The decision to release interviews throughout the week reflects a broader move toward transparency and richer storytelling in award-selection processes. By providing long-form discussions, the Club aims to give voters deeper context beyond traditional stat sheets.

The Maxwell Award, presented annually since 1937, recognises the nation’s most outstanding college football player. This year’s expanded media approach marks a strategic shift toward providing voters with more nuanced insight during the evaluation period.

With Mendoza’s episode now live and further finalists set to feature in the coming days, the series is expected to draw strong engagement from both voters and college football followers, offering an inside view of the individuals shaping the 2025 season.
