Fire in Block 2 of Felton Thermoelectric Plant Causes Heavy Damage (+VIDEO) › Cuba › Granma

A major fire interrupted the final tests carried out after 129 days of maintenance to synchronize with the National Electric System (CEN) Block 2 of the Lidio Ramon Perez Thermoelectric Plant in Felton, Holguin.

Osmel Mechural Reyes, general director of the thermoelectric plant, explained in a statement to Cuban television news that plant workers and firefighters extinguished the fire in about 45 minutes. He said there were no injuries or casualties.

As a result of the incident, Felton’s Module 2 sustained “substantial” damage that was “not easy to destroy,” Mechural Reyes said after an initial assessment of what happened.

He further informed that this incident took place only after that At 2:00 p.m., while the unit’s turbine was running, one of the boiler tubes leaked into the national crude oil circulation. Even if the boiler was switched off, the high heat inside could have caused the fire, he said.

As a preventive measure, Unit 1 was shut down during the event, which provided 250 MW of stability to SEN, and restarted its operation a few minutes after the fire was extinguished, only to resynchronize it during the night.

At the conclusion of this information, key officials of the province were present at the thermoelectric plant.
