LOS ANGELES — Shohei Ohtani became the first American League pitcher in 60 years to hit two home runs and strike out 10 batters in a 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday. White socks in another unusual performance.

Ohtani, who leads the majors with 28 homers, hit solo homers in the first and seventh innings, the first time he had two homers in a game in which he also pitched. The Japanese superstar struck out 10 in 6 1/3 innings but suffered a sprained toenail.

The last player with at least two homers and 10 strikeouts before Ohtani was Cuban Pedro Ramos in the second game of a doubleheader with Cleveland on July 31, 1963 against the Angels.

The feat has been accomplished four more times by Baltimore’s Milt Pappas (1961), Philadelphia’s Rick Wise (1971), San Francisco’s Madison Bumgarner (2017) and Arizona’s Zack Greinke (2019).

For the White Sox, Dominican Eloi Jimenez scored a run to make it 4-3. Cuban Yasmani Crandall 2-1. Venezuela Elvis Andres 3-0.
