San Jose, California – Solid-state battery innovator Ensurge Energy Systems (OSE: ENSU) has entered into a joint development agreement with Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW), the US-based materials science giant, to collaborate on the creation of ultra-high energy density microbatteries. The move marks a significant milestone in the development of next-generation power solutions for compact electronics, with potential applications across the consumer, medical, industrial, and defence sectors.

Under the agreement, the two companies will combine Corning’s Ribbon Ceramic materials and process technology with Ensurge’s existing solid-state microbattery platform. The partnership aims to establish a foundation for a new line of ultra-high performance microbatteries designed to deliver superior energy density in smaller, safer, and more durable formats than traditional lithium-based alternatives.

The collaboration underscores both companies’ commitment to innovation in advanced energy storage, particularly at a time when the demand for compact, high-capacity batteries is growing rapidly across emerging technology markets.

Strategic Alliance to Accelerate Innovation

Announcing the agreement, Ron Verkleeren, Senior Vice President of Corning’s Emerging Innovations Group, said the partnership reflects a shared focus on technological excellence.

“Ensurge and Corning share a drive for excellence in innovation and manufacturing,” said Ron Verkleeren, Senior Vice President, Corning Emerging Innovations Group. “We’re looking forward to collaborating with Ensurge to help advance microbattery technology.”

Corning, headquartered in New York, is widely regarded as a pioneer in materials science and is best known for its expertise in specialty glass, ceramics, and optical physics. The company’s Ribbon Ceramic process is expected to play a crucial role in scaling Ensurge’s solid-state technology for mass production while maintaining high levels of precision and efficiency.

Ensurge Strengthens Market Position

For Ensurge, based in San Jose, California, the collaboration represents an opportunity to strengthen its market position and accelerate commercialisation of its technology. The company’s solid-state microbattery platform already serves a range of high-performance applications, and integrating Corning’s materials science is expected to push energy density to new levels.

Shauna McIntyre, Chief Executive Officer of Ensurge, described the agreement as a transformative step forward for the business.

“Collaborating with an industry pioneer like Corning represents an important strategic milestone for Ensurge,” said Shauna McIntyre, CEO of Ensurge. “Together, we’re applying Corning’s materials science leadership to Ensurge’s solid-state microbattery platform, creating a foundation for transformative advances that will power the next generation of smart devices.”

McIntyre added that the partnership will support Ensurge’s goal of delivering reliable, sustainable, and high-performing power solutions suitable for the growing ecosystem of miniaturised and connected devices.

Meeting Growing Global Demand

The global race to develop high-density microbatteries is intensifying as industries seek lighter, more compact, and longer-lasting power sources. From medical implants and wearable health monitors to wireless sensors and defence-grade electronics, the demand for energy-dense solutions continues to expand.

Industry analysts view partnerships like the Ensurge-Corning agreement as instrumental in bridging the gap between scientific research and scalable commercial deployment. Corning’s experience in large-scale materials production and Ensurge’s expertise in solid-state architecture could give the collaboration a competitive advantage in the high-growth energy storage segment.

A Foundation for Future Technologies

The joint development framework will focus initially on integrating Corning’s advanced ceramics into Ensurge’s existing battery design to enhance durability, thermal stability, and energy density. The companies expect the results of the partnership to serve as a springboard for a new generation of microbattery products that could redefine power management in small form-factor devices.

While neither company disclosed financial details or specific project timelines, the collaboration is expected to progress through joint research, pilot-scale testing, and eventual commercial roll-out.

The announcement reinforces a broader trend of cross-industry collaboration between energy technology firms and advanced materials manufacturers. As the global market for solid-state batteries continues to grow, partnerships such as this one are seen as key to unlocking scalable, cost-effective, and sustainable power solutions.

Looking Ahead

The Ensurge-Corning partnership highlights how strategic alliances can accelerate innovation in energy storage at a time when technological performance, sustainability, and miniaturisation are critical competitive drivers. With both companies bringing complementary expertise to the table, their joint effort may set new standards for what is possible in the field of microbattery design.

If successful, the collaboration could pave the way for ultra-high energy density batteries that enable the next wave of smart, connected, and portable technologies — from advanced medical wearables to industrial sensors and defence systems.
