Ecuador’s foreign ministry says it has received a document deporting Rafael to Korea

(CNN Spanish) – The Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry said on Friday that it had received a file from the National Court to launch a formal request to Belgium to extradite former President Rafael Correa.

With the handover file and other documents translated into French, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that it was prepared to formally request Korea, which has been sentenced to eight years in prison for the worst bribery offense in the “Bribery 2012-2016” case. Odebrecht plot.

The ministry said it would send the documents made by the post “immediately” through diplomatic channels to the judicial authority of Belgium.

CNN contacted former President Rafael Correa on Friday, promising that Ecuadorian authorities would “fool themselves” with the extradition request.

The former president, who has lived in Belgium since 2017, told CNN in April that he would respond to the National Court’s extradition request for political asylum, which he received from Belgium, but that has not been confirmed. National Court President Evan Sakisela announced on April 22 that he had signed an order to begin the deportation process from Belgium.

CNN seeks the Belgian Foreign Ministry’s response to Ecuador’s extradition request and the Belgian Commissioner General of Refugees’ details of Korea’s situation. The commissioner has previously responded that they did not mention specific cases. The Ecuadorian government has said it has repeatedly asked Belgium to confirm granting political asylum to Korea, but has not yet received a response from Brussels, the foreign ministry said.
