Toronto-based punk band Doghouse Rose has released its latest studio album, Born To Break Even, through Stomp Records, marking another milestone in a career built on independent touring, long-term collaboration, and a commitment to the DIY music scene. Released on July 31, the record reflects more than a decade of shared experiences, blending melodic punk influences with introspective songwriting that explores resilience, personal growth, and perseverance.

Founded by longtime friends Sarah Beth and Jefferson Sheppard and joined by Gregory Laraigne along with cousins Jordan and Garrick Zagerman, the five-member band has spent more than 10 years developing its reputation through grassroots touring and a hands-on approach to building its audience. Instead of relying on mainstream exposure, Doghouse Rose established its following by performing at music festivals, packed clubs, community halls, dive bars, and even correctional facilities.

Throughout its career, the Toronto group has toured extensively across North America and Europe while sharing stages with acts including Lagwagon, Strung Out, Teenage Bottlerocket, Belvedere, The Planet Smashers, The Creepshow, and The Real McKenzies. The band’s consistent touring schedule and DIY philosophy have helped cultivate a loyal fan base and strengthen its reputation for energetic live performances.

Album Reflects Growth While Preserving the Band’s Signature Sound

Born To Break Even is the band’s third album released through Stomp Records and continues its collaboration with producer, mixer, and mastering engineer Scott Komer, who previously worked with Doghouse Rose on Unlearn. The project reflects a band willing to expand its musical approach while remaining grounded in the sound that has defined its career.

The album blends melodic punk, pop punk, skate punk, power pop, punk rock, and alternative rock, combining fast-paced instrumentation with emotionally driven songwriting. While maintaining the band’s recognizable energy and melodic style, the record explores themes including grief, anger, depression, frustration, self-reflection, and resilience.

Musically, Born To Break Even represents a natural progression for Doghouse Rose. Influences from late-1990s skate punk are paired with layered harmonies, memorable power-pop hooks, and subtle new-wave elements, resulting in a collection of songs that balances emotional depth with accessible melodies.

The album’s featured tracks highlight that evolution. The title track, Born To Break Even, showcases the band’s ability to combine emotional honesty with high-energy performances, while It Gets Worse delivers memorable hooks alongside reflective lyrics. Closing track Brightside reinforces the optimistic outlook that has become a defining part of the band’s identity, emphasizing hope even while addressing life’s challenges.

Rather than focusing on reinvention, the album reflects a band building upon years of experience. The songs celebrate perseverance, friendship, and the enduring connections formed through music, themes that have remained central to Doghouse Rose since its formation.

Several moments throughout the album are inspired by Toronto’s punk scene, drawing on familiar images of crowded venues, late-night concerts, and the friendships built through years of performing together. These references serve as a backdrop for an album centered on gratitude rather than nostalgia, acknowledging the experiences that have shaped the band’s journey.

With Born To Break Even, Doghouse Rose delivers a record that reflects artistic maturity while remaining faithful to its independent roots. As the band enters its second decade, the album demonstrates how consistent touring, creative collaboration, and authentic songwriting continue to define its place in the modern punk music landscape.
