Defense Ministry says Russia has intercepted Ukrainian drones flying over Moscow

(CNN) — Russia has repelled more than 20 drone attacks from Ukraine over the past day, including in its capital Moscow, a day after launching the largest drone attack on Kyiv since the start of the large-scale invasion, officials said Sunday.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, in the past 24 hours, 24 Ukrainian drones were destroyed in Moscow, Tula, Kaluga, Bryansk and Smolensk regions.

Additionally, according to the Russian Air Defense Ministry, it intercepted 53 Ukrainian drones in Russian-controlled areas of Ukraine during the same period. They include Kharkiv, Kherson, Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and the self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR).

“Seventeen HIMARS MLRS (Multiple Missile Systems) missiles were intercepted in the last 24 hours,” the ministry added.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said no injuries or damage were reported as a result of the intercepted drones’ remains.

In Russia’s Tula region, one of the drones crashed into an apartment building, damaging windows and causing minor cuts to one person, according to Tula Governor Alexei Tyumin.

According to Denis Pushil, head of the Russian-backed DPR, the targeted attack on the DPR damaged the power system and left parts of the region without power overnight.

“The situation is difficult,” Pushilin said in a telegram this Sunday. He added: “The work continues and everything possible is being done to return heat and light to our citizens as quickly as possible.”

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its air defenses destroyed two S-200 anti-aircraft missiles over the Sea of Azov at around 11 a.m. Moscow time (3 a.m. Miami time) on Sunday.

According to local officials, the attacks came after Russia launched a massive drone strike on Ukraine’s capital, Kiev. A Telegram message from the Ukrainian Air Force said it had intercepted 71 Shahed drones in six regions of Ukraine, most of them in the Kyiv region. He described the attack as a “record number” of drones.

The attack on Kyiv left 77 residential buildings and 120 companies without power in the city center on Saturday.

As the weather turns colder, Ukraine fears a repeat of last winter’s events, when Russia launched a series of attacks against its energy infrastructure.
