Indiana University head coach Curt Cignetti has been named the 2025 recipient of the George Munger Award, recognising him as Collegiate Coach of the Year following a season that fundamentally reshaped the trajectory of the Hoosiers’ football programme. The announcement was made by Maxwell Football Club Executive Director Mark Wolpert, marking one of the most significant individual honours in US college football coaching.

The award follows a landmark campaign that elevated Indiana into the upper tier of the sport, delivering unprecedented results on both a conference and national stage.

A Landmark Season for Indiana Football

Leading Indiana to the first undefeated regular season in programme history, Cignetti guided the Hoosiers to their first outright Big Ten Championship since 1945. The title also marked the programme’s first conference championship since a shared crown in 1967, ending decades of near-misses and signalling a decisive shift in competitive standing.

The Big Ten success translated directly into national recognition, with Indiana securing the No. 1 overall seed in the College Football Playoff. Under Cignetti’s leadership, the Hoosiers have now advanced in the playoff for a second consecutive season as they continue their pursuit of a national title, reinforcing their status as a legitimate championship contender.

Record-Breaking Performance and Competitive Milestones

Cignetti’s 2025 campaign established a series of programme and conference benchmarks. Indiana recorded 13 wins, the most in a single season in school history, while Cignetti achieved nine Big Ten Conference victories, the highest total ever posted by an Indiana head coach in one season.

He also became the first head coach in programme history to lead Indiana to consecutive 10–0 starts, highlighting a level of sustained excellence rarely associated with the Hoosiers in the modern era. In addition, Indiana secured its first road victory over an Associated Press Top Five opponent, a result widely viewed as one of the defining moments of the season.

Perhaps most notably, Cignetti became the first head coach in school history to guide Indiana to the College Football Playoff. That achievement has cemented his tenure as one of the most transformative periods the programme has experienced, redefining both internal expectations and external perceptions.

The Significance of the George Munger Award

The George Munger Award is presented annually by the Maxwell Football Club and honours the nation’s top collegiate head coach. Named after the former Pennsylvania and Duke coach, the award carries a strong association with leadership, integrity, and sustained excellence within the sport.

Past recipients include many of college football’s most influential figures, placing Cignetti’s recognition among an elite group of coaches whose impact extended beyond individual seasons. The honour reflects not only on-field success but also broader programme leadership, including player development, culture, and strategic direction.

Broader Implications for the Programme

Beyond individual recognition, the award underscores Indiana’s emergence as a consistent force within college football’s upper echelon. From a business and institutional perspective, the transformation carries implications for recruitment, media exposure, commercial partnerships, and long-term competitiveness within the Big Ten and nationally.

For a programme that has historically operated outside the sport’s traditional power structure, the rapid ascent under Cignetti represents a material shift in brand value and sporting credibility.

Award Presentation and National Ceremony

The formal presentation of the George Munger Coach of the Year Award will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at the Coca-Cola Roxy Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia. The ceremony will form part of the Maxwell Football Club’s annual awards event, during which the organisation will also present national honours spanning high school, collegiate, and professional football.

As Indiana continues its post-season campaign, Cignetti’s selection serves as formal acknowledgement of a season that has already redefined the programme’s place in the national landscape and set a new benchmark for future success.
