Guantanamo left-hander Ronis Elias, who played with the Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox and Washington Nationals in the major leagues and is currently in the Dominican League, has joined the ranks of players affiliated with organized baseball. Cuban team for 2023 Classic, sources say
Francis Romero posted this news on his Twitter page.
“Sources: Cuban left-hander Ronis Elias (34) has agreed to be part of the Cuban national team for the upcoming 5th World Baseball Classic, sources have confirmed to me and Cuba Ball.
“Elias is in the Dominican Winter League and is now a free agent.”
Elias joins Andy Ibáñez, Yoan López, Elian Leyva, Josúan Hernández, Yoan Moncada and Luis Robert as other Cuban baseball players who join the national team outside the control of the Cuban Baseball Federation.
If this is officially confirmed, it could continue to raise questions about the veracity that Cuban executives used over the years when they were eager to bring in MLB players.
