The Chelsea Music Festival has announced its 2026 season, marking its 17th annual edition with a programme centred on the theme “Every Story Counts.” The week-long event will take place in New York City from 20 to 27 June, bringing together music, visual arts and culinary experiences in a cross-disciplinary celebration of American cultural narratives.
Artistic Directors Melinda Lee Masur and Ken-David Masur revealed that the upcoming season will include 12 New York premieres and one world premiere, reinforcing the festival’s position as a platform for new and diverse artistic voices. The festival, previously described as a “gem of a series” by The New York Times, continues to expand its offering with a mix of classical, jazz and theatrical performances alongside community-focused events.
In a joint statement, the directors outlined the inspiration behind the 2026 theme: “This season, our theme “Every Story Counts” draws inspiration from the phrase “Every Vote Counts,” where each person’s vote is dignified and counted in a democracy. We celebrate the power of music and storytelling to preserve and elevate the voices of people from all walks of life in America,” said Festival Artistic Directors Melinda Lee Masur and Ken-David Masur. “As we contemplate America’s 250th anniversary, we welcome the voices of composers, musicians, artists, chefs, and creators who contribute to the cultural fabric of this country and strive to elevate our shared humanity. Our hope is to continue providing a stage and safe haven for the exchange of ideas and differences, and a fertile ground for artistic collaborations between the performing, visual, and culinary arts. This season, Every Story Counts, will be an uplifting feast for the ears, eyes and palate, and a welcome place for audiences of all ages and backgrounds.”
The 2026 programme includes a series of high-profile performances and collaborations. Among the highlights is Copland & Twain on 25 June, a theatrical concert directed by Bill Barclay and produced by Concert Theatre Works. The production blends Aaron Copland’s incidental music with the writings of Mark Twain, performed by five actors alongside the Festival Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Ken-David Masur. Masur is also scheduled to conduct Ania Vu’s Water Realms later in the week.
Chamber music will feature prominently, including a performance by the Verona Quartet at Poet’s House. The ensemble will present MoonStrike, a work by composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate, drawing on American Indian legends and storytelling traditions.
The festival will also spotlight contemporary piano repertoire through a salon-style concert led by pianists Min Kwon and Timo Andres, joined by performers from Rutgers University. The programme forms part of Kwon’s America/Beautiful project, which has commissioned more than 70 composers to create variations on “America the Beautiful.” The concert will include New York premieres by composers such as Samuel Adler, Fred Hersch and Stewart Copeland.
Opening the festival on 20 June, mezzo-soprano Clara Osowski will perform Steven Ward’s song cycle An Invitation to Love, based on poetry by Paul Laurence Dunbar. Later in the week, on 26 June, the festival will host the world premiere of William Susman’s Clouds and Flames. The work commemorates the 25th anniversary of 9/11 and pays tribute to Philippe Pettit’s 1974 tightrope walk between the World Trade Center towers.
The closing event on 27 June will take the form of a jazz finale, featuring vibraphonist Warren Wolf and pianist Alex Brown performing alongside the Ivalas Quartet. The programme includes the New York premiere of Chick Corea’s Lyric Suite for Sextet, underscoring the festival’s commitment to genre diversity.
Beyond music, the festival continues to integrate culinary and visual arts into its programming. Food-focused events include a Mark Twain-inspired Sunday brunch at Pier 57’s City Winery Bistro, as well as an evening dedicated to global street food curated by Chef Hinnerk von Bargen, based on his book Street Foods.
Visual art will also play a significant role, with photographer Park Joon presenting works from his collection America the Beautiful: An Outsider’s Perspective. Additionally, Paul Collins will showcase selections from his Unbannable Library project at family events and venues across New York City.
Tickets for the 2026 Chelsea Music Festival will be released in stages, with season passes available from 6 April and individual tickets going on sale from 17 April via the festival’s official website.
