Navy quarterback Blake Horvath has been named the winner of the Maxwell Football Club’s inaugural Military Service Academy Leadership Award, a new accolade created to recognise leadership excellence across the United States service academies.

Maxwell Football Club Executive Director Mark Wolpert announced that Horvath had secured the award, which is designed to honour a player who demonstrates standout leadership both on the pitch and within their academy community.

The award adds to a growing list of achievements for Horvath, who has helped drive one of the most successful periods in Navy football history while also maintaining strong academic and leadership credentials at the Naval Academy.

Horvath has been a central figure in Navy’s recent resurgence, leading the Midshipmen to a school-record 21 wins over the past two seasons. The team’s run included consecutive Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy titles — the programme’s first repeat since 2012–13 — and was underscored by a 17–16 victory over Army in 2025.

Under his leadership, Navy recorded back-to-back 10-win seasons for the first time in school history, demonstrating sustained performance at a level rarely achieved by the programme. The Midshipmen finished 11–2 in 2025, matching the school record for wins in a single season, and posted a combined 21–5 record across the last two years.

That two-year winning percentage ranks as the ninth-best in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and is the strongest among teams outside the so-called Power 4 conferences, highlighting Navy’s ability to compete effectively despite operating outside the financial and recruiting structures that support the sport’s biggest programmes.

On an individual level, Horvath has built his reputation as one of the most productive dual-threat quarterbacks in service academy football. He became the first Navy quarterback to both rush and pass for 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons, underlining his ability to influence games through multiple facets of the offence.

He is also only the third player in school history to exceed 1,200 yards passing and 1,200 yards rushing in a single season — a milestone that reflects both his physical output and the team’s tactical reliance on his versatility.

In 2024, Horvath recorded 2,599 yards of total offence, the second-highest single-season figure in Navy history. He also tied the school record with 13 touchdown passes, setting a benchmark for aerial production in a system traditionally associated with the running game.

He followed that with an even stronger 2025 campaign, producing 2,780 yards of total offence. His output included 1,580 passing yards, 12 passing touchdowns, and more than 1,200 rushing yards with 16 rushing scores, earning him Third Team All-Conference honours.

Horvath’s performances also included record-setting moments, notably a Navy single-game best of 469 yards of total offence against Air Force. He additionally holds the longest run in programme history, a 95-yard touchdown that underlined his explosiveness and game-breaking ability.

Across his career, Horvath has ranked among the most efficient quarterbacks in service academy history. He holds the highest career passing efficiency of any service-academy quarterback with more than 150 pass attempts, indicating sustained productivity rather than a small-sample surge.

He also sits second in Navy history for completion percentage, behind former quarterback Roger Staubach, and ranks in the programme’s top five for passing touchdowns, total offence, and points responsible for. Those metrics place him among the most influential players of his era, combining statistical consistency with decisive contributions in key fixtures.

Beyond the football field, Horvath has paired his athletic success with academic achievement and leadership responsibilities at the Naval Academy. The Hilliard, Ohio native holds a 3.69 GPA while studying operations research, a demanding discipline focused on data-driven decision-making and analytical problem solving.

He ranks highly in overall order of merit among his peers and has received CSC Academic All-District honours. Horvath has also been named just the 11th NFF National Scholar-Athlete in Naval Academy history, further reinforcing his standing as a high-performing student-athlete.

His wider academy involvement includes participation in service initiatives, faith-based groups, and leadership organisations, reflecting a profile aligned with the academy’s emphasis on discipline, service, and integrity as preparation for future military leadership.

The formal presentation of the Military Service Academy Leadership Award is scheduled for Saturday, March 14, 2026, at the Coca-Cola Roxy Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia. The Maxwell Football Club will also present a broader slate of national awards at the event, spanning recognition from high school football through to the professional ranks.
