  • Takoi’s team prepares to unlock Magnet. The restaurant has closed and will now house a new location called Barda.

The void left by Detroit’s Core City neighborhood alongside what was once one of the city’s most popular dining spots will soon be filled with Argentine food and flair.

Best known for its Mediterranean-inspired panels and “no-party” pay structure for employees, Magnet closed in August after less than a year in business, along with Top Young Hospitality, the group that runs Magnet and Corktown Thailand. . .

Chef Javier Bardawell, a native of Buenos Aires, will make his Detroit debut with a new restaurant called Barda in the old Magnet Square at 4842 Grand River Ave., Detroit News Reports.

The restaurant will offer a simple bar program (think Argentine wines and Fernet Italian) and a variety of vegetable, meat and seafood dishes at a variety of prices to avoid the very “exclusive” feeling of the surroundings. It is expected to open on April 15.

Bardauil apparently came to the Detroit area in 2019 in hopes of opening a wood-burning stove, but saw that the newly opened magnet did have a similar theme, pattern, and aesthetic.

He said: “In Argentina, in general, we gather around a fire.” Detroit News. “There is no way we can skip the weekend without huddling around a campfire. That’s why I was thinking, bring the fire here. Well, someone has already built it for me. I’m not going to change anything. ”

The planned April opening date will give Barda some time to secure her liquor license, and at that time, Detroit restaurants can operate with expanded capacities.

Bardawell chose Michael Goldberg, Allenby’s Detroit co-owner, to be the restaurant’s executive chef, who is helping Bardawell understand Detroit’s vibrant culinary scene and will soon be a part.

“Gathering around the fire is a very honest and simple way, and it will be seasonal. Nothing cool. I really hope people have fun here, like I do in the kitchen. I love to laugh. I like to enjoy what I do all the time. This is my goal. ”
