A 99-year-old man's credible claim describes a sad reality in Mexico

An old man went to a butcher shop City Juarez Chihuahua, He promised to get the money in a few days, ordering some products on credit and leaving a piece of cloth in exchange.

It was called a man Ramiro Ram Maldonado He shared the video on his account TikTok There he notes: “He asked me to borrow two turkey tails, He says he will give old age pension in 20 days. He wanted to give me a belt in exchange for the warranty. He is 99 years old,” he said.

In the recording, the old man is shy about borrowing money and remarks: “The belt is very good,” so Ramiro replies: “No, no, in 20 days, you know I believe you.”

The video is no longer available on the platform. But I imagine that for many seniors in the country, apart from the universal pension provided by the central government, the money they receive as a pension after retirement is often insufficient.

Poverty among the population aged 65 and over

The case of a 99-year-old man is an example of what a large proportion of elderly people in Mexico are experiencing.Poverty and aging in Mexico 2020Prepared by the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (CONEVAL), many of them lack sufficient economic resources.

CONEVAL notes that there were in 2022 9.8 million people aged 65 and over in the country, which is 7.6% of the population. Among them, 55.7% of the elderly received pensions from social schemes and the average amount they received $1,292 pesos per person per month. On the other hand, 33.1% had retirement pensions with an average monthly receipt of $7,362. Therefore, 8.7 million people in that age group received income from it.

However9.8% of seniors worked in menial jobs and earned an average monthly wage of $6,990 pesos. The document indicates that poverty in the sector has decreased in the population as it was only 37.9%, representing a decrease of 5.3 percentage points compared to 2018.

On the other hand, the country has it since 2007 Old age pension (PBPAM), which started with $500 pesos. In 2023 the support will increase to $2,400 pesos per month and in 2024 it will rise to $3,000 pesos per month.
