What happened: Authorities say at least one person was killed in the crash. Two people have been rescued from the rubble and 35 people have been evacuated from parts of the building that collapsed since the 1:30 p.m. crash, Miami-Tate Deputy Fire Chief Ray Jadalla said. According to Miami-Tate County Mayor Daniel Levine Kawa, the building has 12 stories and more than 130 apartments.
Search efforts were halted: Surface Mayor Charles W. said an intensive search and rescue effort began just after 2am ET. Burkett said. But for now, Miami-Date Commissioner Sally Heyman has said search and rescue efforts are in “suspension mode” for severe storms caused by wind and lightning.
About the missing: Heman says at the moment, it is not known where the 51 people who are supposed to live in the partially collapsed area of the building are. However, authorities did not know if 51 people were in the building at the time of the collapse.
About the building: Burkett said the building, which was built in the 1980s, was undergoing roofing work, but did not know if it was a factor in the collapse.
If you are looking for a loved one: The Miami-Date Fire Rescue says a family reunification center has been set up at 9301 Collins Avenue for anyone looking for the missing. If emergency officers have family members at 305-614-1819, their whereabouts are unknown.
