The Land does not orbit in a vertical position, its axis is always inclined 23.5˚ with respect to the sun-earth line, for this reason half of the year the North Hemisphere is leaning towards him Sun, which means summer time in this area and winter for the south, while the other half of the year, when changing the inclination in the opposite direction to the sun, the roles are reversed.

(Also: Our species evolved with collective cooperative adaptation)

The times when this occurs are known as solstices and they are significant at the points in the Earth’s orbit where this inclination is most pronounced. These days are the longest (in the hemisphere of summer) and shorter (in the hemisphere of winter) of the year.

Therefore, although in meteorology the first of June is marked as the day on which summer begins for the inhabitants of the northern hemisphere of the planet, June 21 is perhaps the most widely recognized day, which is why the long tradition from different cultures to celebrate this event and to follow the movement of the sun, something to which we owe, for example, the construction of monuments such as Stonehenge.

Solstice rituals

This event is also closely related to the beginning of the harvest, to fertility and abundance. For this reason, there are traditions around the world related to this topic. For example, in Sweden it is customary to feast on herring and lots of vodka and perform dances around a maypole, which can be considered a phallic symbol.

While in Greece, where as in many European countries the celebration became Saint John’s Day under the influence of Christianity, they still celebrate an ancient ritual called Klidonas, in which single women invoke success in love.

There are those who take advantage of the occasion to attract good fortune and positive energy by lighting candles or writing down negative thoughts to burn them, leaving them behind.
