The April 22 is celebrated the Day of the Girl in Information and Communication Technologies (TIC), the YPF Foundation, ARSAT (Empresa Argentina de Soluciones Satelitales), through its gender and technology program, and INET (National Institute of Technological Education) formed an alliance to promote that girls and women young people are interested in studying careers related to science and technology.
The objective is to encourage them to be ICT creators and not just users. As part of this initiative, a contest will soon be launched to girls 12 to 18 years from technical schools across the country. It seeks to reward innovative projects for solve problems about energy and other issues such as mobility, waste and technology.
This project, like the Ingenias program, which the Fundacin YPF carried out together with the NGO Girls in Technology, it seeks to promote citizen participation of adolescent girls and reduce the gender gap in the technologist and science from the earliest ages.
The women represent only 25% of those who study STEM-related careers (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and 15% of those who enroll in the programming career this reflects the gender gap that exists in the scientific and technological field. Of the student enrollment in technical high schools, 33% are women, of which 34.8% choose specialties related to Computer Science or Communication.
The figures show that choices about studies and professions have great limitations imposed by gender stereotypes. For this reason, this alliance, which strengthens the actions that each organization carries out, to change these indicators, awakening the vocation for these careers.
