The Maxwell Football Club has selected Morgan Stanley Wealth Management to develop a financial literacy and education initiative for high school football players and their families, with a focus on helping young athletes responsibly manage revenue generated through Name, Image and Likeness opportunities.
The initiative is designed to give student-athletes and their families practical financial knowledge as NIL opportunities continue to influence high school and college athletics. Programming will address both immediate financial decisions and longer-term planning, including how athletes can manage earnings during and beyond their playing careers.
Founded in 1935, the Maxwell Football Club is a longstanding football awards organization and is home to the Maxwell Award, Chuck Bednarik Award and Bert Bell Award. The organization said the new financial education effort expands its role in supporting young athletes beyond recognition for their performance on the field.
Financial Education to Focus on NIL Revenue
Under the initiative, the Maxwell Football Club and Morgan Stanley will develop educational programming covering key financial issues that student-athletes and their families may encounter as NIL opportunities become more widely available.
The program is expected to address budgeting and saving, contract and endorsement deal considerations, tax issues associated with NIL income and the fundamentals of long-term financial literacy. Another area of emphasis will be helping athletes and their families identify and avoid common financial pitfalls.
NIL arrangements can create new sources of income for young athletes through endorsements, appearances and other commercial opportunities tied to their personal brands. Those opportunities can also introduce financial responsibilities at an earlier age, requiring athletes and their families to understand issues that may previously have arisen later in a professional sports career.
The Maxwell Football Club said the initiative is intended to help fill that knowledge gap by providing resources before, during and after an athlete’s playing career.
“today’s high school football players are facing financial opportunities and decisions that didn’t exist for previous generations,” said Mark Wolpert, Executive Director of the Maxwell Football Club. “Our selection of Morgan Stanley reflects the Maxwell Football Club’s commitment not only to celebrating excellence on the field, but also to supporting the long-term success of these young men and their families off of it.”
In-Person Sessions and Digital Resources Planned
Financial literacy content developed through the initiative will be delivered through several channels, including in-person educational sessions and digital resources.
Programming will also be incorporated into the Maxwell Football Club’s existing platforms and events, providing the organization with an established network through which it can reach student-athletes and their families.
The approach is intended to make financial education available in multiple formats, allowing families to access information through both direct instruction and online resources. Additional details about the content, schedule and rollout of the program are expected to be announced in the coming months.
NIL Creates New Financial Responsibilities for Young Athletes
The initiative comes as NIL revenue continues to change the financial environment surrounding amateur athletics. For some student-athletes, commercial opportunities can arrive while they are still in high school, introducing questions about taxes, contracts, spending and saving well before they reach college or professional sports.
By focusing on financial literacy at the high school level, the Maxwell Football Club and Morgan Stanley are seeking to provide athletes and their families with a foundation for evaluating those opportunities and managing any resulting income.
The program also places an emphasis on long-term financial decision-making rather than treating NIL earnings solely as short-term income. Understanding how to budget, save and evaluate commercial agreements could become increasingly important as young athletes build their personal brands and navigate potential endorsement opportunities.
The Maxwell Football Club said further information about the financial literacy initiative will be released in the coming months as the educational programming is developed and incorporated into its events and platforms.
