OAKLAND, Calif. — Oakland-based power pop outfit The Goods released “Minor Key” on August 19, offering a second preview of the group’s forthcoming album, Goodbye Summertime. The 14-track record is scheduled for release September 16 through Dandy Boy Records and marks a broader musical and emotional direction for songwriter Rob Good.

Running three minutes and 38 seconds, “Minor Key” follows the previously released single “Summer’s Almost Gone.” While the first track centered on optimism and appreciating the present, the new song turns toward heartbreak, memory and the challenge of moving forward after a relationship ends.

The single draws on power pop, indie pop, guitar pop, psych-pop, jangle pop and sunshine pop influences while maintaining the melodic approach that has shaped The Goods’ earlier work.

Personal Change Drives Goodbye Summertime

The material for Goodbye Summertime emerged during a period of significant personal upheaval for Good. Rather than developing gradually over several years, many of the songs were written and recorded as the events inspiring them unfolded.

“My whole life turned upside down one summer,” recalls Good. “The long-term relationship I was in collapsed, and in the wake of that, I found new love. I was sorting through the grief and failure of my previous relationship and the bliss and anxiety of my new one all at once, all while basically living at my recording studio, and I found myself in an intensely creative state.”

That period produced songs at a rapid pace, allowing the record to capture Good’s changing emotions with a sense of immediacy.

“I’d be experiencing some crazy high or crushing low, and I’d write a song about it and immediately record it. Many of these songs are real-time accounts of what I was going through in those moments.”

“Minor Key” Explores Heartbreak and Letting Go

“Minor Key” serves as one of the album’s clearest reflections on separation. Compared with the forward-looking energy of “Summer’s Almost Gone,” the new single focuses on what remains after a relationship or important moment has already passed.

Good describes the song as “a bittersweet goodbye to someone left behind.”

The track’s reflective tone also connects with the Oakland and broader Bay Area setting that has influenced Good’s songwriting. Its mood evokes late-night drives, fading memories and the uncertainty that can accompany major personal transitions.

Rather than treating heartbreak as an isolated theme, Goodbye Summertime follows the emotional changes surrounding loss, new relationships and recovery.

The Goods Expand Their Sound Across 14 Tracks

The upcoming album moves beyond the group’s established jangling power pop foundation, incorporating a wider range of arrangements and instrumentation.

Among the tracks, “Lazy” brings a hazy, psychedelic-pop character, while “Punchbowl” uses Mellotron textures to create a more melancholy atmosphere. “Wing” emphasizes vulnerability, and album closer “Sleepytime” develops around a gradual Wurlitzer-driven crescendo.

Good produced Goodbye Summertime at his Oakland studio. The project also features contributions from Cherron Arens, Yea-Ming Chen and Ian McBrayer, with Bart Thurber handling mixing and mastering.

The expanded production approach allows The Goods to explore different musical territory while retaining the hooks and guitar-focused songwriting that have defined the project.

Album Balances Heartbreak With Optimism

Although heartbreak runs throughout Goodbye Summertime, Good said the album ultimately focuses as much on resilience and joy as it does on loss.

“There’s some pain in there, but there’s a lot of joy as well, and creating the record was a joyous experience,” says Good. “Ultimately, it’s about persisting through difficult times and finding a way to carry on. That’s what making this record helped me to do.”

The album also reflects Good’s years within Oakland’s independent music community, where local neighborhoods, clubs and record stores have helped shape his musical perspective.

With “Minor Key,” The Goods provide another indication that Goodbye Summertime will combine the melodic immediacy of the group’s previous work with a more personal and stylistically varied collection of songs. The full album is scheduled for release September 16 through Dandy Boy Records.
