The Republican Attorneys General Association (RAGA) has announced its support for Michael Allen as the Republican nominee for Colorado Attorney General, positioning the race as a major contest ahead of the November general election.
RAGA said Allen’s background as a prosecutor and public safety official makes him the preferred candidate to lead Colorado’s top legal office. The organization highlighted his record in criminal prosecutions, efforts to reduce crime, and experience managing complex legal matters as key factors behind its endorsement.
“Michael Allen is the proven, results-driven prosecutor Colorado needs as its next Attorney General,” said RAGA Executive Director Adam Piper. “His Democratic opponent, Jena Griswold, is one of the most radical and least qualified candidates in the country. The Colorado Attorney General race is the epitome of the credentialed-versus-crazy AG narrative that voters are seeing across the country. This is a top-tier race for RAGA, and Michael Allen will be elected as Colorado’s Attorney General this fall.”
The endorsement comes as both parties prepare for a competitive statewide election. RAGA described the Colorado Attorney General race as a priority contest and said Republicans are confident about Allen’s chances in November.
Legal Experience Becomes Central Issue in Colorado Attorney General Race
The Republican group has raised concerns about Democratic candidate Jena Griswold’s qualifications and legal experience, pointing to criticism from several former Colorado Attorneys General.
According to RAGA, three former Colorado Attorneys General — Ken Salazar, John Suthers, and Cynthia Coffman — have questioned whether Griswold has the necessary legal background and judgment to oversee the Attorney General’s office. The organization noted that the office handles a wide range of responsibilities, including criminal law, consumer protection, civil rights, water law, and constitutional litigation.
RAGA also referenced a CBS News investigation that examined claims made about Griswold’s professional background. The organization stated that the investigation raised questions about descriptions of her previous legal experience, including claims involving international anti-corruption work and appearances before the U.S. Supreme Court.
The investigation cited by RAGA also reported that some Colorado Democrats, including legal professionals and former colleagues, privately expressed concerns about Griswold’s readiness for the role but declined to publicly comment.
RAGA said these issues have created an opportunity for Republicans as voters evaluate candidates before the November election.
Michael Allen Highlights Prosecutorial Record and Public Safety Experience
Michael Allen enters the race with more than two decades of experience in law enforcement and prosecution. A Colorado native and Navy veteran, Allen has served as District Attorney for the 4th Judicial District since being elected in 2020 and re-elected in 2024.
During his tenure, Allen has overseen major criminal cases and initiatives aimed at addressing violent crime and organized criminal activity. His campaign highlights his role in prosecuting the Club Q mass shooting case, securing what was described as the second-longest prison sentence in Colorado history, and reducing motor vehicle thefts by half in a single year.
Allen has also built an Organized Crime Unit focused on addressing serious criminal activity, including fentanyl-related cases. RAGA said the unit has prosecuted more fentanyl-death cases than any other prosecutor’s office in Colorado.
The Republican nominee has received endorsements from several law enforcement and political figures, including the Colorado Fraternal Order of Police, former Governor Bill Owens, former Attorney General John Suthers, and members of Colorado’s congressional delegation.
As the November election approaches, public safety, legal experience, and leadership of the Attorney General’s office are expected to remain central issues for Colorado voters. RAGA said it believes Allen’s prosecutorial background and record will appeal to voters seeking a candidate focused on law enforcement and justice.
