WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Republican Attorneys General Association (RAGA) has strongly criticized an investigation involving Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill, describing the effort as a politically motivated action that could have broader implications for elected legal officials across the United States.
In a statement released from Washington, D.C., RAGA Executive Director Adam Piper condemned what the organization characterized as an attempt to use legal processes for partisan purposes. The association argued that the investigation of a sitting attorney general for actions taken in an official capacity raises significant concerns about the independence of state legal officers and their ability to provide legal guidance without fear of retaliation.
The statement comes amid ongoing national discussions surrounding the role of attorneys general, the scope of prosecutorial authority, and the relationship between politics and legal proceedings. While the statement did not provide details regarding the underlying investigation, RAGA framed the matter as an example of what it views as politically driven legal action targeting a public official.
According to the organization, the investigation concerns actions taken by Murrill in her official role as attorney general, including the issuance of legal opinions and guidance to public officials. RAGA argued that such responsibilities are central to the duties of an attorney general and should not become the basis for legal scrutiny because of political disagreements.
Piper issued a strong defense of Murrill and criticized those responsible for pursuing the investigation.
“The liberal lawfare coming out of New Orleans is nothing more than kangaroo court intimidation tactics. Targeting a sitting Attorney General for carrying out her official duties is a dangerous attempt to weaponize the legal system against elected officials with whom they disagree. This is political intimidation, plain and simple, and it should concern every American who believes in the rule of law.”
RAGA warned that investigations involving attorneys general over official legal guidance could create broader consequences for state governments and legal institutions. The organization said such actions could discourage attorneys general from offering candid legal opinions and advice to public officials, potentially affecting the functioning of state government.
The association further argued that elected legal officers must be able to provide guidance and interpretations of the law without concern that those actions could later become the subject of politically motivated investigations.
Piper expanded on those concerns in a second statement, emphasizing what RAGA believes are the wider implications of the case.
“The idea that a grand jury would be used to investigate a sitting attorney general for issuing a legal opinion and warning public officials about the law is as outrageous as it is dangerous. If this is allowed to stand, no attorney general will be free to provide candid legal guidance without fear of politically motivated retaliation.”
The comments highlight broader debates over accountability and independence within the legal system. Supporters of investigations involving public officials generally argue that elected leaders should remain subject to legal review when questions arise regarding their actions. Critics, however, contend that investigations can sometimes be used as political tools against officials with differing viewpoints.
RAGA’s statement did not include additional information regarding the legal basis of the investigation or the specific actions under review. Instead, the organization focused on defending Murrill’s role as attorney general and warning against what it views as the politicization of legal processes.
The Republican Attorneys General Association, which represents Republican attorneys general from across the country, frequently advocates on issues involving state authority, legal policy, and the responsibilities of elected legal officials. The organization has often spoken on matters it believes affect the ability of attorneys general to perform their duties independently and without political interference.
Concluding its statement, RAGA reaffirmed its support for Murrill and reiterated its opposition to what it described as the weaponization of legal institutions for partisan purposes.
