The centenary celebrations surrounding America’s most famous highway are inspiring a new tourism concept designed to blend sport, travel and digital engagement. A newly announced initiative, the Route 66 Golf Trail, aims to connect dozens of golf courses across the historic highway while offering golfers an interactive platform to track their journey along the iconic route.
Route 66’s 100th anniversary is underway, and I wanted to suggest a story that combines international golf with the iconic American road-trip.
The initiative has been designated a Centennial project and positions itself as the world’s longest golf trail. The curated route links 66 golf courses located along the historic highway, stretching across eight states from Illinois to California. The project is designed to encourage golfers and tourists to explore the historic corridor through sport while promoting travel and hospitality businesses located along the route.
The Route 66 Golf Trail — officially designated a Centennial project — is the world’s longest golf trail: 66 diverse courses spanning eight states from Illinois to California.
Developers behind the initiative say the concept aims to transform the traditional road trip into a structured sporting journey, where players can progressively complete courses along the historic route. The project combines elements of tourism, sports participation and digital engagement to appeal both to domestic golfers and international visitors exploring the United States.
Golfers (and families) can now play, track, and explore the Mother Road in one unforgettable journey!
Central to the project is a dedicated online platform designed to track players’ progress across the trail while integrating travel planning tools. The website is intended to function as both a sporting hub and a travel guide for participants navigating the famous highway.
All features of the website will be unlocked at our ribbon cutting on April 30th at LaFortune Park Golf Course in Tulsa, OK.
The official launch event is scheduled to take place at LaFortune Park Golf Course in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Organisers plan to introduce the full functionality of the platform during the ribbon-cutting ceremony, which is expected to coincide with broader centennial-related tourism activity linked to the historic highway.
Once features are released, golfers will have free access to the following:
The digital platform is designed to allow players to document their progress along the trail and compare results with other participants around the world. Among the core features are tools for uploading scores or scanned scorecards from participating courses, enabling golfers to build a verified record of their journey across the trail.
Users will also be able to rank their experience at each location and compare results through international leaderboards. The platform integrates social sharing tools intended to allow players to post their progress online while encouraging broader community engagement among participants.
In addition to its sporting elements, the platform also incorporates travel-planning functionality. Participants can access information on attractions along the historic highway, including Route 66 landmarks, accommodation options, vehicle rentals and other amenities aimed at supporting extended road-trip experiences.
The project is designed to bring together golf, tourism and digital storytelling in a format that organisers believe will appeal to a wide audience, including families travelling together.
Endorsed by Oklahoma icon, Garth Brooks, and the U.S. Route 66 Centennial Commission, this is already generating buzz among U.S. golfers and international tourists.
Support from prominent cultural figures and organisations linked to the highway’s centennial celebrations has already helped generate attention around the initiative. Organisers believe the combination of sport and heritage tourism could draw interest from international travellers seeking unique road-trip experiences tied to American cultural history.
As the 100th anniversary of Route 66 approaches, tourism authorities and businesses across the eight states connected by the highway are exploring new ways to attract visitors. The Route 66 Golf Trail represents one of the latest efforts to transform the historic route into a modern travel experience that blends recreation, technology and heritage.
If successful, the project could position the famous highway not only as a nostalgic driving route but also as a global sporting journey linking dozens of golf destinations across the United States.
