Skydweller Aero, in partnership with Nokia Federal Solutions, has been awarded a contract under the U.S. Navy’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) programme to demonstrate an airborne 5G communications hub designed to strengthen secure and resilient tactical networks.

The initiative, formally titled “Intelligent Radio Access Network for Beyond 5G Resilient Tactical Networks,” will see the two companies combine Skydweller’s solar-powered, autonomous aircraft with Nokia’s Banshee Flex Radio technology. The goal is to develop and test a deployable 5G network capable of delivering high-speed, low-latency connectivity from the sky, particularly in areas where traditional communications infrastructure is unavailable or has been compromised.

Enabling Next-Generation Military Communications

The partnership aims to demonstrate how advanced communications technology can underpin modern defence operations by providing flexible, high-bandwidth connectivity across dispersed assets. By establishing an airborne network node that can remain aloft for extended periods, the programme seeks to enhance the U.S. Navy’s ability to operate securely in challenging and remote environments.

Skydweller Aero’s aircraft platform is designed for long-endurance, solar-powered flight, capable of maintaining station over an area for months without refuelling. When integrated with Nokia’s Banshee Flex Radio — a modular system supporting 4G, 5G, and beyond — the system could offer a rapidly deployable, autonomous solution for establishing tactical communication networks over wide geographic areas.

According to the project brief, the airborne 5G hub will serve as a “secure, resilient tactical network” node, supporting joint operations and integrating seamlessly with existing and emerging communications architectures.

Supporting U.S. Navy Operational Concepts

The U.S. Navy is pursuing a number of advanced networking initiatives as part of its Distributed Maritime Operations (DMO) concept, which emphasises the ability to coordinate dispersed naval assets through secure data links and shared situational awareness. The Skydweller–Nokia collaboration directly supports this framework by providing a platform that could extend the range and resilience of naval communications.

The effort also aligns with the U.S. Department of Defense’s Combined Joint All-Domain Command and Control (CJADC2) initiative, an overarching strategy to integrate communications, sensors, and command systems across all branches of the armed forces. Aerial 5G hubs such as the one being developed under this contract could form a key component of that wider network, helping commanders maintain connectivity and control across air, sea, and land domains.

In a statement, the companies described the programme as a demonstration of how industry partnerships can accelerate innovation in the defence communications sector. The SBIR contract provides funding to advance the technical maturity of the airborne 5G hub and conduct a live demonstration for military evaluation.

Technological Potential and Future Applications

Beyond military use, technologies developed through this programme could have wider implications for emergency response, disaster recovery, and remote industrial operations. Airborne networks capable of delivering high-bandwidth communications in areas without existing infrastructure could support humanitarian missions, search-and-rescue operations, or environmental monitoring.

Skydweller Aero has positioned itself as a pioneer in autonomous, solar-powered flight systems capable of persistent operations without a human pilot. The company’s aircraft design allows for continuous operation at high altitude, powered by renewable energy, offering a potential solution for long-term surveillance, communication, and data relay missions.

Nokia Federal Solutions, a U.S.-based division of the Finnish telecommunications group, focuses on secure network solutions for defence and government customers. Its Banshee Flex Radio platform provides adaptable radio access technology, supporting both commercial and tactical applications within 5G and future network frameworks.

Strengthening Transatlantic Innovation Ties

The contract underscores the growing collaboration between European and American firms in the field of advanced defence communications. As global militaries seek to modernise their network infrastructure, partnerships such as that between Skydweller Aero and Nokia Federal highlight the role of cross-border innovation in meeting complex operational demands.

While financial terms of the award were not disclosed, the companies indicated that the demonstration phase will take place over the coming year, with results to inform future development and potential deployment across U.S. defence operations.
