The assassination attempt on Donald Trump has “overtaken” conversations about whether President Joe Biden should drop out of the presidential race, Ohio Democratic Rep. Greg Landsman said on CNN on Tuesday.
Described as “competitive” by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Landsman has publicly suggested he “more and more” aligns with Democrats to step aside following Biden's disastrous performance in a debate against Donald Trump last month.
Trump's anti-life bid, however, was before the presidential race was upended.
On “CNN This Morning” on Tuesday, Kasie Hunt asked Landesman, “Are you ready to tell President Biden that you think he should step aside?”
“No. First, what we all saw on Saturday was the assassination attempt on former President Trump,” Landesman replied. “As you can imagine, it mumbled the conversations we were having at home.”
Landsman said he had raised his concerns with party leaders and would leave the decision up to them and Biden.
“I expressed to the leadership my concerns about the president's ability to fight Donald Trump,” Landsman said. “They'll make the decision, or he'll make it, hopefully with their input.”
In comments last week, Landsman said he wanted to talk to his constituents in Ohio before making a decision about the president's political future.
Speaking with Hunt, Landsman took issue with Trump's vice presidential pick, JD Vance, who criticized his “inflammatory” language, saying it ran counter to the message of unity Trump was trying to convey.
“For someone from southwest Ohio who grew up around the same time and five miles from JD Vance (we're both from Butler County), it's a problem that he (Trump) elected someone who uses divisive and inflammatory language,” Landsman said. .
