Carroll is the first D-Backs player to win Rookie of the Year, unanimously

He hit .285 with 54 steals, 30 doubles, 25 home runs, 10 triples and 116 runs scored in 155 games to help the Diamondbacks advance to their second World Series. The left-hander became just the third rookie to hit 20 or more home runs, hit 10 or more triples and steal 50 or more bases in a season.

Carroll led all rookies on the old circuit in hits (161), runs scored, total bases (286) and OPS (.868), and he was one of the main participants in the Most Valuable Player race for much of the season. It will be announced next Thursday.

Outfielder James Outman of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Japanese pitcher Kodai Senga of the New York Mets were the other two finalists for National League Rookie of the Year.

Outman hit .248 with 23 home runs, 16 steals and 86 runs scored, while Chenga went 12-7 with a 2.98 ERA and fanned 202 batters in 29 starts in 166.1 innings.

Carroll’s season ended with a surprise appearance in the World Series, in which the Diamondbacks fell to the Texas Rangers in five games.

The D-Backs were the last of the current 30 teams without a Rookie of the Year winner.

Pitcher Senga finished second with 22 second-place votes and 71 points. Outfielder Outman was third, Colorado Rockies slugger Nolan Jones was fourth and Cincinnati Reds infielder Matt McClain was fifth.

Carroll used his power, speed and defense to help his team reach the playoffs after losing 110 games two seasons ago.

In the American League, Gunner Henderson of the Baltimore Orioles also won the nomination unanimously.

This is the fifth time both the American and National recognitions have been unanimous, and Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees and Cody Bellinger of the Los Angeles Dodgers did so in 2017.
