After this Wednesday, Defense and Civil Protection Secretary Rosa Isela Rodríguez announced the sixth extension of the deadline for the legalization of chocolate cars, with the Mexican Automobile Dealers Association (AMDA) disapproving of the decision and alleging corruption surrounding the mandate.

The order will make it illegal for another 3 months, according to the association that brings together sellers of more than 62 car brands.

From March 1 to September 26, the order allowed 1,803,058 chocolate cars to get license plates, nearly 100,000 units more than the record number of new units sold during the same period.

According to the SSPC, the regulation contributes to improving public safety by including these vehicles in the Public Vehicle Register (Repuve), which allows owners to be identified and prevented from using them in illegal activities.

However, Guillermo Rosales Zárate, Executive President of AMDA, rejected the argument in statements presented today and even accused corruption: “The justification for extending such a mandate is that these units are not used in illegal activities when in fact criminals often use stolen. Latest model vehicles.”

“Not to mention the ongoing corruption by authorities at all levels that allow illegal entry into the country, circulation in urban areas and roads under federal jurisdiction, as well as selling in markets and city streets,” he condemned.

Rodríguez Velázquez highlighted that this initiative not only contributes to the improvement of transport routes, but also that technological and security improvements are being made to the hologram of the Public Vehicle Registry (Repuve) to strengthen vehicle identification.
