Shohei Ohtani will not play again this season with a torn hamstring

Shohei Ohtani will not pitch again this season due to a torn ACL, general manager Perry Minasian announces.

The Angels reported that the Japanese suffered a torn ligament in his elbow after the pitcher left the game against the Reds.

Anaheim, California. – The Japanese Los Angeles Angels general manager Perry Minassian said Shohei Ohtani will not pitch again for the rest of the season because of a torn ligament in his elbow.

The Angels still don’t know if Ohtani will need surgery to repair his UCL tendon.

Shohei Ohtani left midway through the second inning of the first game of a doubleheader against the Cincinnati Reds.

The Japanese was 2-2 against Reds third baseman Christian Encarnacion-Strand when the Angels medical staff came out to check on him on the 94-mph fastball. After a brief discussion, Shohei Ohtani came off the top after throwing just 26 pitches.

Ohtani returned to the Angels lineup as the designated hitter for the second game of the doubleheader. The mixed superstar has lost just two games this season and has played in every game since May 2.

The Japanese did not speak to the media after the second game because he was heavily evaluated, but manager Phil Nevin said Ohtani said his arm “didn’t feel right.”

“He told me he didn’t feel any pain. It’s pretty much the same thing he’s been feeling the last two weeks,” Nevin said after the Angels’ 9-4 loss to the Reds.

The Angels also announced that three-time American League MVP award winner Mike Trout will return to the disabled list Wednesday night.

Trout came off the disabled list Tuesday after missing 38 games following surgery on a broken hand, which he limped off in both games of a doubleheader against Cincinnati.

He hit his 44th home run of the season in the first inning of the first game of the day against the Reds, a two-run drive to establish himself as the major league leader in that category. He left the Angels game as the designated hitter and was replaced by rookie Nolan Shanuel.

Japanese, a contender for the AL MVP award, missed his previous start last week to rest his arm after a long summer. Although the Japanese occasionally picked up speed in the early innings, his fastball slowed down in Wednesday’s game against the Reds’ top six.
