PHOENIX — Time will tell how manager Torrey Lovullo handles catching for the D-Backs, but Gabriel Moreno has made a case to be a starter.
For now, Lovullo’s plan is to have Carson Kelly — who returned from the disabled list Monday with a broken right forearm — share responsibility behind the plate with Moreno.
At some point, a decision has to be made. Lovullo has shown before that the team’s mindset is to win now.
Moreno felt his return to the lineup Thursday afternoon 5-4 loss to the Phillies at Chase Field. The Barquisimeto native went 2 for 4, including an RBI single in the third inning to start a four-run rally and raise his average to one. 284.
This is just a small sample of what Moreno has contributed this season.
Moreno isn’t the D-Backs’ best receiver as far as safety is concerned. He’s one of the best in the major leagues. Here’s a list of what the 23-year-old, who Arizona acquired over the winter along with Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in a trade with the Blue Jays for Doulton Varsho, has accomplished so far:
“I think there’s a lot of respect from opponents when he’s behind the plate,” Lovello said. “He’s not directed by a lot of people. He’s in control of what he’s doing out there at all times.”
Lovello decided to keep Moreno out of the lineup for three days during the series against the Phillies because the catcher was “a little tired, a little tired, with some aches and pains” and in order. Moreno to give Kelly a chance to rejoin the majors.
“I pushed Carson a lot when he left,” Lovello said. “I feel this is a good opportunity for him to recharge. His presence will definitely be felt.”
Moreno echoed the importance of rest days, as he took advantage of the time to rest his recently ailing thumb. Although he is still making adjustments as he is a 23-year-old player in the majors, the youngster says he is satisfied with how things have turned out for him.
Asked if he should be the starting catcher, Moreno said: “I can’t answer that. I’ve done a good job and we’re happy to see Kelly recover from her injury. He’s a good catcher and he’ll help us win games.”
