Six major scientific organizations in Europe, known as The G6 for Sciencea, have published a joint statement on the priorities they consider necessary to be included in the design of the next EU Framework Program on Research and Innovation. The statement reflects the outcome of a high-level dialogue organized by the Group of Six at Ringberg Castle in Bavaria (Germany) from 17 to 19 April. The group of six invited representatives of the national governments of France, Germany, Italy and Spain, and the European Commission, as well as science experts, to discuss the future of European research, and the strategic directions of the EU’s next framework programme.
The statement stresses that in the context of a wide range of geopolitical, social, economic and environmental challenges The critical role of basic research and excellent science To lead Europe towards sustainable development and innovation.
In the face of increasingly fierce global competition, great ambition is needed to forge a strong and cohesive European research area, with enhanced capabilities to respond to crises and achieve technological supremacy.
G6 calls for effective and innovative ways to collaborate with international partners –With particular attention to the United Kingdom and Switzerland as indispensable leaders– and to carry out basic energy conversion on a large scale.
To underscore the importance of excellent science and disruptive innovation, as well as research-based public policies, the six nations also call for Better coordination of financing mechanisms The European Union and national governments to develop the research infrastructure ecosystem in a sustainable and future-oriented manner.
Taken together, these goals should be reflected in An ambitious and crisis-resistant European research and innovation budget It provides balanced support for both frontier research and applied science.
The G6 Network brings together six European and interdisciplinary research organizations with a total annual budget of €15.6 billion and more than 140,000 employees: Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, National Center for Scientific Research, Higher Council for Scientific Research, Helmholtz -Gemeinschaft Deutscher Forschungszentren, Leibniz-Gemeinschaft and Max-Planck Gesellschaft.
