Uruguay’s interest in science and technology has grown: 76% consider research to be beneficial for the country

The National Agency for Research and Innovation has released the results of a public perception survey on science, technology, innovation and entrepreneurship.

The National Agency for Research and Innovation (ANII) has released the results of a public perception survey on science, technology, innovation and entrepreneurship.

The issues are very diverse and diverse topics, but let’s focus on some of them.

For example, one of the main indicators of scientific culture in a society is the presence of cultural scientific activities. In the 2021 edition of the survey, the number of Uruguayans who declared their participation in this type of activity increased.

60% stated that they attended the zoo, botanical garden, nature reserves as well as planetariums. In second and third place, Heritage Day was mentioned as the most popular activity with 46% of participants and book fairs with 40%.

Another indicator of the survey refers to the consumption of science, technology and innovation content. In this sense, seven out of ten Uruguayans said they use the Internet to search for scientific information as well as watch television programs or documentaries on science, technology or nature.

This is followed by reading scientific news in newspapers and searching for information on social networks.

Regarding whether Uruguayans consider that there are innovative companies in the country, 70% of those surveyed said yes, but they are few. In contrast, a third of Uruguayans said they were aware of some of the projects.

Finally, it is important to stress that nine out of ten Uruguayans believe that public spending on medicine, health, housing and education should be increased. In science and technology, seven in ten Uruguayans believe public spending should be increased.
