In April, Cannes boss Thierry Fremaux spoke to Deadline about the decision to open the festival with Debbs’ film, calling it a “beautiful film”.

“The opening film also had to be released in French theaters at the same time; we didn’t put the platform films at that time because we wanted France to participate in the festival,” Fremaux said. “The film is a hit and Johnny Depp (as Louis XV) is fantastic in it.”
