Promotes hydraulic resource solutions based on science and innovation

HAVANA, April 14 (ACN) The directors of the National Institute of Water Resources (INRH) said that the National Institute of Water Resources (INRH) provides solutions based on science and innovation in matters related to the water supply and the hydrological situation in Cuba.

At a press conference, Karen Leva Felix, director of science, technology and innovation for that organization, stated that there are more than 20 projects in partnership with centers of higher education such as the Technological University of Havana (commonly known as CUJAE) and Pine River University.

He explained that one of the main programs is the Integrated Water Resources Management of the Ariguanabo Basin, which is of great importance to the water supply in the provinces of Havana and Artemisa, in cooperation with the CUJAE Hydraulic Research Center.

He said that they are promoting technological solutions for the automation of water resources through an initiative led by the School of Automation of the University of Pinar del Rio, in order to gradually achieve profitability and control the mechanisms of water supply.

The specialist noted that the center of the system with the largest number of projects is the Water Science, Innovation and Technology Company of Camaguey, the only organization dedicated exclusively to research in this field.

In this sense, he explained to the press that they are implementing projects to use zeolite in the water purification process intended for the population, and that they are being implemented at water treatment plants in Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba.

Argelio Fernández Richelme, director of hydrology and hydrogeology at the National Institute of Health, explained that the country’s reservoirs are 45 percent of storage capacity.
The specialist indicated that the last assessment that was made expected an increase in rainfall at the end of May, and called for it to provide water in order to reduce the effects on supply.
